I dont know how many people are aware of the practice of shark finning; essentially sharks are caught, their fins cut off and they are then thrown back into the sea where, unable to swim, they drown. It is estimated that 73 million sharks are killed this way each year. The fins are used to make a chinese delicacy, shark fin soup.

It is an abhorent practice and one which, I feel, should be banned. Now, being realistic it's going to be a struggle to ban worldwide as the Chinese are not going to listen. However, I would like to see the trade in fins banned in the UK.

There is a petition running and it would be wonderful if the users of PH could take a minute (thats really all it takes) to sign it.

For those that want further information, there is lots here;

Thanks!

I am not really a huge fan of animal rights.....but moral obligation as the top predator of the food chain is something we all must practice.

Shark fishing is not a problem...but finning and dumping the rest of the animal is morally wrong. Eat the whole of it instead of chucking a disabled animal back in the water to die.

It's barbaric,just like the japanise with the dolphins/whales, I'm no greenie, quite the opposite,but there must be an international law that maybe slow it down , so we don't endanger any more species.

Not always the case, some stab the lobester in the face and then boil it.

I boil approx 1500 crab every year for the dressed crab I sell in my shop, sorry, but I don't flinch as they try to get out of the boiler.
I always do this live as it can effect the overall freshness of the dressed crab.
Been doing this for years.

You don't eat fish? Lucky you don't know what I do with warm bloodied animals then.

No. If we pulled the claws off then threw the rest of the crab back in to die then that would also be morally wrong.

But we don't.

I do eat fish, and meat, and sometime vegetables. I just think it's all a bit weird how 'brutality' to one creature is terrible, but fine for another.

No no think about what you said and what the OP said,It's barbaric if you don't eat all the fish/animal
that you kill, just in this case the fins of the shark.now that is wrong.
I'm skilled at what I do and have been for 30 years or more, yet if it wasn't for people like me you would be eating only veg.
