I was sat by my computer at my desk, and caught a bit of movement out the corner of my eye. I looked over and saw a HUGE spider lumbering over my desk. I'm not scared of spiders, but the size of this thing, combined with the unexpected movement made me gasp and jump back.
I've never seen a spider this size, other than on TV or in pet shops. Once I'd composed myself, I went into the kitchen to get a glass (planning to capture, photograph then release it), and in the few seconds I was gone it had vanished. Uh-oh..
I had a look around for it, but it's really gone. As I said, I'm not scared of them, but the thought of this thing hiding somewhere in my room is making me a little uneasy. It was pretty cool, and if I'd caught it I'd be fine with it. I'm sure it's hiding under my pillow waiting for the opportunity to lay spider eggs in my brain.
That is all. I had to get it off my chest.

Presumably just a large house spider.
Off topic, anyone know what they eat?
Insects - so they are a useful house guest.Off topic, anyone know what they eat?
The OP's spider is probably a tegeneria gigantea; they can get pretty big but won't do you any harm. An absolutely enormous specimen has taken up residence in my bathroom this year. He's so big that even the cat is wary of him. My reckoning is that if he's finding enough to eat then he's doing a good job and I'd rather share the house with him than his dinner. Even if he does need helping out of the bath fairly regularly.
