keeeping hensI fancy
Discussion
I fancy having a couple of hens for my daughter to feed and pet ( and eggs).
I have an area in my garden approx 12 foot square... Is that adequate?
Where do I start ? youtube is a bit naff with americans and most being adverts.
any advice appreciated

Are you sure you mean 12 square feet? i.e. 4' by 3'? Thats tiny.
You might be able to keep a couple of small Bantams on that but I'd not think about hens.
You need at least two BTW as they are social animals.
yes sorry i meant 12 foot x 12 foot was planning to have two of them, I'd obviously let them on to the garden when in view, living in the country there are quite a few foxes about. You might be able to keep a couple of small Bantams on that but I'd not think about hens.

My dad went to the local auctions and some of them were going for 25p each... no doubt with some of the people about would be dead before even being transported home, sad that a life can be bought for so little.
getting quite excited now my little girl is going to love them.
Any views on the coop I saw?
A few chicken keepers/lovers on here:

The coop you've posted looks fine for 2-3 birds and 12 foot by 12foot would be plenty. Try to make the run interesting by putting in mixed substrates, bark chippings to scratch in etc, and providing an outdoor perch and perhaps some hardy plants for shade.
Chickens are great, very rewarding, surprisingly entertaining, far better eggs than you'll get in any supermarket, good for teaching the kids about "where things come from", good for waste disposal (they'll eat almost any kitchen scraps bar raw potato/onion) and so on.
Go for it and post pics when you're done

lol not much but it was a funny read never the lessmy friend has 4 hens and they live in a hen house in a home build enclosure which is about 10ft long, but she does let them roam around on the lawn for a bit everyday, they are friendly little things that wander into her house too!
I think anything bigger than the hen houses you can buy can only be a bonus?
