I don't wish to cause another argument over whether foxes have and do kill pet cats but whilst reading the local rag the other day I picked up this story:

http://www.epsomguardian.co.uk/archive/2011/08/05/...

Diagnosis by a vet. so facts are facts.

I think we all need to be aware that our beloved pets can have confrontations and lose with the 'local fox'

I have 2 cats, both BSH one a boy Beefy weighing in around 6.4kg and Mimi a girl weighing in around 3.8kg, Beefy can look after himself and chase off any fox, but Mimi on the other hand cannot. I am thankful I have a catflap allowing them to both come and go as they please and because of this Mimi would not be outside if there was danger, she could always come back in....

Not a nice link I know, but we should all be aware of what can happen to our pets.

Lots of videos on youtube of fox/cat interaction - foxes seen to be very wary of cats, and not really quick enough to avoid the claws. Foxes don't have vets, so an infected wound or an eye injury could be the end of it. Not worth getting involved for the fox.

Foxes tend to steer clear of our garden but the dogs might well get them.. They get the odd rabbit now and again.

Now that made me laugh !!

My old maine coone attacked a GSD once, he dropped out of a tree onto it's back - the noise was awful. I suspect the fox was fairly screaming too..

Brilliant!!

I've witnessed my average sized moggy send a fox packing. The fox thought about it for a mo, before getting outta there with Tom (RIP) glued to his arse.

I think a fox would be quicker than my dobermann, but if he got a grip of the fox it would be game over. He can bite bloody hard...

Foxes are quick, and for what they are, pretty agile too, not as agile as a cat, but much more than most dogs!

Fox did get his own back the next night, I saw him trotting off down the road with an out-of-date sausage roll in his mouth.

Not sure about the PM from the vet, only evidence of a fox would be the hair under the claws of the cat, however, it has to be high on the list. We live in a rural area nad have had several fox incidents with our cats, thankfully with lots of trees, ours have escaped unhurt. I don't know what the answer is to an "excess" of foxes, certanly not fox-hunting, maybe the occasional cat incident is similar to the occasional polar-bear incident, life is not danger-free, and some of the wildlife should be given more space rather than demonised. At least the animals aren't as repulsive as the thieving scum on some of our streets shown on the news recently. I'd rather see a fox loose at 1am than a rioter.
