I must admit, this is a thread I didn't think I'd be posting for several more years at least frown

I came home last Sunday morning to find our 6yr old Dachshund Prawney struggling to walk up the stairs, putting it down to a bloated belly from a 'stolen' plate of food we tried not to be overly concerned, however with my OH being a vet she is all too aware of potential spine problems so she decided to x-ray her on Monday as a precaution..

Unfortunately rather than a bloated belly the x-ray revealed that her spine had started to go, as is the way with the breed frown From first signs on Sunday morning to Monday evening she had deteriorated to such a state that she could barely walk on her hind legs, come Tuesday morning she was effectively paralysed in her rear frown

We brought her home Wednesday evening where she went to sleep for one last time, I'm sure in her little corner of doggy heaven she will be pestering people for cuddles and slices of toast, she was such a soft, sappy little dog that everyone who met loved it is such a shame that we've lost her far too soon.

RIP Prawney.

My Mum lost her first Dachshund at 6 with this back problem, heartbreaking.Dachshunds have such a big personality they really are wonderful intelligent Dogs. Her second one lived to a grand age of 17 and died the same weekend as Colin Mcrae.
Hope the happy memories stay with you.

There is a theory the Human race exists to satisfy the every whim of the Dachshund species.

Just found this old video of him doing his trick of sitting on his bum and begging, hope it gives you a smile in this sad time.

frown I'm so sorry, Seen so many of these cases over the years, always heartbreaking esp as they are usually still so young. Glad to say I've not had to witness it in the last couple. Try and remember the good times.

We have been thinking of a daschund for our next dog, is it a lottery with the back problem thing then?

this isnt good. really sorry to hear your loss mate, we have a long haired daschund, and he is brilliant.

Hate kids, and as we have one on the way, he has to go live with my mum. Going to miss him being here, it just doesnt feel right. Think of the smiles he brought you. RIP Hound. frown

Sorry for your loss. We've got two mini wired haired. One is 6 and the other is now 13.

He had a few back probs when he was 6 or so, and had Xrays and the like. After a couple of months though of the occasional yelp and hobbling he recovered and is still going strong. Apart from being deaf and incredibly stubborn.

With their long spines it's far more common although I don't believe it's a specific breed failing, in Prawney's case it was was likely that she had weaker bones in the spine and her extra length did nothing to help.

If you have the chance to have a Dachshund in your life then go for it, they are fantastic little dogs, they have the personality of a bigger dog with the size of a smaller dog, almost perfect combo IMO, they do appear far happier as a group, we still have two others to look boss us about.

Everyone else> Thanks for the kind words, there is a sausage shaped hole in the household now and her cousin Broc doesn't quite understand why her friend is no longer about.

I'm sure we will have a puppy choosing us sooner rather than later..
