Controversial subject, yes but not quite what it seems. This was however the situation I found myself in yesterday.

I had gone round to a friend’s for a bbq and on arriving asked if I would have a look at a cat who had crawled into my friend's garden who was in a sorry state and if necessary put it down.

The poor thing had a nasty infection to it's eye with maggots crawling out of it, it was very skinny and shaking. Obviously it didn't have much of a chance.

We couldn't determine the owner as there was no collar and the neighbours didn't recognise him. Eventually we managed to get hold of a vet who would come out and take him away. A few of us chipped in for the bill but it did leave me wondering what I would have done if I had to kill him myself, how humanely I could have done it and also if it was less humane making him wait even longer for the vet to come out.

Thoughts?

It's a stty situation. And you did the best you could getting a vet out.

Anything you tried yourself would be worse if it went wrong (likely?), than waiting for the vet I'd think.

Not a cat but I've had to kill a wild rabbit in the past. Had a bad case of Myx and was unable to run away, I picked it up and broke its neck. Not something I relished but IMHO had to be done. If I could have been certain about the cat as well in your situation I'd have done the same. Much as I love animals (have 2 cats that are equicalent to children) I'd never let them suffer.

Tbh the fact that a vet was able to come out is probably the best scenario and the extra hour or so it had to wait compared to how long it'd been in it's poor state was nothing really. Just really awful for you guys to witness, at least it had some company in its hour of need.

I guess if you couldn't get it to a vet or a vet come to you then breaking it's neck would be the main option, however I would not know how hard this would be to do, even a dying cat may fight with everything they've got left so you'd have to know how to hold it so as not to get scratched or bitten to death and be absolutely sure you'd make a clean kill.

Not something I'd ever want to deal with. Lethal injection is the kindest way.

If I had to kill it I would have. I've killed rabbits before so I'm pretty sure I could have done it quickly for the guy. I don't like to see things suffer.

Thanks for the responses though.

Poor cat, such a sad way to go too frown Did you hear back from the vet? Don't think I'd be able to do that myself.

I have done it before for rabbits. But without a shotgun, I dont think I would have wanted to kill a cat. Just a wimp I guess.

Sorry you had to deal with it, but well done for doing so.

Another guy called the vet, I think he knew him but I didn't hear anything more. The infection was terminal though so I guess he was put down pretty quick after that.

I've had to do this not so long ago...someone's cat was literally broken in half buy a car

I was walking along, cat dashed out...car hit it and ran its body and back-end over...the driver didn't stop....leaving the cat screeching (a hellish noise that sticks with you) and trying to drag itself along...I got it out of the road and cradled it, then broke it's neck

poor little fker

I felt guilty for days after driving over an already dead cat so no way could i do this any other way than by being PTS by a vet.

I was wondering how a cat could end up in that condition. Shot, perhaps, or eye scratched out in a fight. Probably only happened a week before the OP did the decent thing, wouldn't take long to deteriorate, if only he was found before then he might have been ok. Poor little mite.

to stop it scratching and flailing around you wrap it in your jacket/sweater/t-shirt (anything) like a cocoon, then cradle it and stroke it talking softly...then break it's neck

horrible thing to have to do
