For the first six months after we moved into our new place, our delightful little sod blissfully snubbed the two massive fields around the house in favour of wandering inside and curling out a massive cable in the corner of his tray. This, despite having spent the previous four years in the old house sodding off outside to do his business.

The missus recently dug up our flowerbeds, and the Rufus has decided to decorate those instead.

Dried turds in soil VS rooms filled with eye watering fumes. We're grateful for small mercies.

But I don't understand. If your cat can go outside, why have you got a tray inside as well? Do lots of people do this?

For my part it is because I refuse to have a catflap* put in, so when I am out the cats are inside and therefore have no way of going out.

  • Way to many mice brought in at all hours of the day and night still alive to have one again!

Similar situation here. No flap ATM. So some days the cat is locked in all day.

And I think this morning he had a walk around the garden, then came in and did a big turd, then went out for a fight with an interloper.

I've a catflap but still have to have a litter tray in the house!
I thought it was when we had really bad snow and she didn't want to go outside! but she carried on doing it after, but at least it was always on the bathroom mat! So I decided to keep a litter tray there just incase.

Ahhh - I see. Thought I was being a cruel heartless owner then! (My cat would probably still say I am)

We're going to have to do this soon as he's getting on and prone to the occasional accident whilst he's left indoors. Apparently when he has had litter trays in the past he has ignored the outdoors and done it in there instead.

No, ours does it too. She can be out all day (as in from 7am) and will come in at 6pm for dinner, and use the tray...

Put it this way. If there comes a day when your cat is too afraid/ill/lazy to hop through the flap to the great outdoors, would you prefer it if they had taken the litter tray option or the spray-and-smear-it-around-the-house option?

Nope, both of mine do

I can't have a cat flap (nor would I to be honest having lost one to the road outside) so I have to have litter trays for them.

Plus, cleaning a litter tray is a good way to see if they are ill in anyway frown

We have a tray in the en-suite and a tray in the utility room so that if the cats are in overnight they have somewhere to go. But the trays are left down all day long as well so I guess they just make the most of them.

so that if they need to "go" during the day when im at work they can, like wise at night, rather them use a tray then wake me up at 2am in the morning.

If it was scared/old/poorly then clearly I would use a tray but as none of that was suggested in the OP's post (indeed, you could even make a reasonable assumption that if a cat is coming back inside to use the tray then it is none of those things) I responded accordingly. rolleyes

We returned home yesterday to find a present in my other half's flight case:

I think he's trying to convince us to get him a litter tray.

Yep, the cat knows you will be leaving him/her and the complaint has now been formally logged, so to speak......

She is off to Germany again next week with work. I'll let her know he has a grievance regarding this.
