She has a wood burning stove. She said "I opened the door to the fire but couldn't hear anything".

You did what?

Wonder how much you'd have to pay someone to perch up a ladder 40ft or so in the air with a can of wasp killer stuff! My price would be £1m or so...

Assuming they are wasps and not bees, build a fire in the woodburner, as smoky as possible and watch the little bds flee (best to be inside your house with windows closed when this is done, I should think).

They're honey bees, and that particular flue has been closed off with a fluvent, so the bottom of it should be closed.

By all means light a fire in the wood burner but do not kill the bees! seriously we need more bees, find a local beekeeper as I am sure they would love them.

Whoaaaaaaaa, that is serious! They look like wasps to me, might be honey bees but far too swarm-like to be anything else. Fire lit quick would be the best bet, I think, but they should definitely get a call to the council or something too. I think stuff of this severity is free to have dealt with, though I'm not sure.

By the way, your camera is fking excellent, what is it?

Slap the jam on and get up there and grab the queen.

Easy.

Don't bee keepers come and deal with stuff like this for free?

Those are honeybees they should be fairly passive while they are swarming. They will form a bee ball around the queen while their scouts are looking around for a new home, then they will be (ha ha) off again. It might take overnight for them to go unless they decide thay like it on the chimney but it is an unlikely spot for them to set up permanently. Try not to disturb them and there should not be any problems, obviously if you start to annoy them they will sting, but bees are not as stupid as to kill themselves over nothing so they will let you know you are annoying them by bumping into you as a warning.
Looks like a medium swarm to me maybe 30,000 or so. If you phone the local police they will have the number of a local beekeeper who will be very happy to take them away for you, a decent bunch can cost up to a few hundred quid!!

Canon 20D and 70-200L

From a quick Google it suggests wasps don't swarm and bees swarp as a reaction to threats.

Someone disturbed a nest possibly?

I believe the colony splits when it gets too large. I'd guess this lot are looking for a new home.
