I have a great dane/pointer cross who is 11 years old now and is having bother with hers back legs, arthritis etc.Against my will, due to a large proportion of various animals we've had being killed by negligence, bad treatment/ignorance over the last few years i begrudgingly trundle off to the vets to give them more money, sorry, get treatment. He prescribed Metacam. So,considering the dog was already in pain with stiffness in her back and rear end she now has loss of appetite, being unable to lift herself up at all now and bad co-ordination to contend with?,and i'm buggered if im going back to the vets to give more money, sorry, receive more treatment.
I instantly stopped giving her the Metacam, will the side effects wear off?,is there anything we can give her to alleviate, revive her,or generally flush out the effects of the Metacam? Thanks!

I refuse to use metacam as every animal we've had use it has had bad side effects, including vomiting.

For painkillers, previcox is one of the ones we use - 11 year old Newfie....

Not had this.

We started with a magnetic collar like what old folks wear on their wrists. Worked great on the collie for a couple of years. Didn't really see a difference in the setter.
They now are on glucosamine tablets - again like old folks get. Ours are from Healthy Direct and seem to help - vet likes these - and are relatively cheap.
Collie, after a bad fit at 16, is now on Aktivait to stimulate her brain (cheaper online than vet) and Vivitonin (vet only but not too bad £) for her heart - now at half push after the fit.
Personally I think its worth every penny with these, and no side effects. The old girl is so much more active and with it. Its bought her another several months / year and she is happy and even playful ! Although, there is still some shakiness and weakness she wouldn't cope without all the pills.

The above symptoms you describe are not typical for metacam except maybe the loss of appetite. Sounds like she has far more going on with her spine/ joints etc esp re: breed/age. You should see a difference within 24hrs if you stop it.

I don't know what you want too hear really, can't imagine you'll trust my advice anyway as I work for one of these money grabbing vets.

An elderly dog should get a blood test to check for kidney function before getting px Metacam (but obviously that costs) You should have been warned to only give with food.

Metacam is px a lot and we see few reactions but we ALWAYS warn about the possibility of vomiting or diarrhoea.

I can't help thinking unless everything gets better once metacam has been stopped that there may be more going on esp with her breed mix and age than just stiff legs.

Maybe change vets? And from what you've described, if she doesn't improve what are you going to do, leave her like that?

I really hate this attitude, yes vets cost but please do not tar us all with the same brush, we recently had client change to us who had a cheap quick 5 min appt but was so worried about the state of her dog she just turned up on our doorstep. She had a very sick dog. 3hrs of treament/ tests later etc we had a pretty good idea of what was wrong, the owners bill for that night (she walked in 4.45pm with no appt, we had that dog treated and pretty much diagnosed by 7.30pm but only because of the tests we did) approx £400. (previous vet cost about £20) We have an eternally grateful client who I doubt will ever go anywhere else! To her the time/ care treatment she recieved from us was worth every penny. (and it was!)

Am sure one of the vets on here will comment, but have you tried Synoquin (spelling?)?

Our older labs are on it, and it has made a world of difference to them - much the same as Metacam does, but with no side effects.

We buy it online as it is cheaper than from the vets, but our vet recommended it to us.

I'm not a vet, but a couple of our dogs have been on metacam and we know a few more that use it. We've never had it induce vomiting and in fact as pretty good. As Bex said, maybe you've got more going on?

Best of luck either way smile

Does sound like there's more going on - but only a vet can tell you what. I've had dogs on Metacam long term and they have been fine.
