Why the feckkery does my dog take it upon himself to occasionally eat cat sh!t?

There we were, walking, he does usual sniff around, and next I know he's gobbled 2" of the stuff and is masticating it as if its a sausage..

Its not often he does it (very rare in fact)

So far its stayed down (in some ways that worries me more than if it had come up TBH!) - but does anyone elses dog the same, or do you have any views as to why he does this occasionally?

some pet food does not get digested properly by some animals usually because they have been fed too much,
therefore some food comes out the other end too.

So dogs see other animals poo which is still rich in 'what ever' as food,

ours used to do it on occasion,

for some reason fox poo is favourable to a friend of mines hound.

Yep, the dirty bugger.

Eats his own as well, usually waits for it to cool down a little first, but not always.

Seems to go through phases, I've taken to spraying shaving foam over his fresh craps on the lawn, lasts a couple of days and appears to taste pretty horrific when he attempts to gobble one down - the intention here is he'll finally give up. Clearly, picking them up removes the issue anyway, can't always get there first however.

Has been working quite well... although on Friday morning he found some fresh fox st and promptly rolled in it - attempting to wash 6st of Labrador, who has a bit of fetish for the garden hose is, err, interesting.

I've read before the occasional st muncher maybe on the search for something lacking in their diet... our one, well he's just a daft black lab!

My partner said his dog used to eat her own poo, he fixed this problem by feeding her charcol biscuits. Apparently a certain vitamin deficiancy causes the dog to want to eat it's own poo.

My folks used to have a GSD which would excavate cat poo from the litter tray and eat it. Cat litter granules on snout = GTFO me!

We used to reckon it was a simple misunderstanding - dogs bury food, cats bury crap, dog thinking "hur hur hur, I'm eating your stinky foreign cat foods", cats thinking "dumb mutt!"

hehe

My spaniel will eat any faeces apart from dog, fox is a particular favourite. My Ex's Westie has a thing for rabbit droppings, plenty of them in the fields by us to keep him happy!

I think this means they are not getting enough vegetable matter in their diet so they get it from animals who do eat it.....

As for cat poo, not sure, guess it must just taste of cat food?!? I've never tried it to find out, the poo or the food...

Right - more carrots for our fella tonight then, to be fair most of what he eats is a combination of cereal and rice, with small amount of chicken and oily fish

They both have the Burns Holistic dog food which should provide everything they need, you would have thought so anyway! The Vet told me they all do it to some extent & it was nothing to worry about.

Have owned seven dogs who have lived alongside cats and all of them have a penchant for cat poo given the chance! Don't think it's a deficiency when they're eating other animals crap, just for some bizarre reason is appealing to them.

It's a very common problem. My dog does it occasionally. He won't bother for months and then suddenly there he goes! And every now and again he will he his own.

Nobody really knows for certain why they do it. Best thing is reducing the chances of them getting to the cat poo and distracting them before they get to it.

As long as it's occasional don't worry too much.

One of the guys at work told me a similar story to this the other day. His sister's dog has quite a penchant for eating its own freshly laid turds. Anyway, one recent batch must have been a little too much for the dog's stomach to hold, so unfortunately it vomited half-digested turd and bile all over the carpets. Apparently the smell really was quite violent.
