I was round a friends and after he finished the meal, let his dog lick the plate clean..

I was slightingly disgusted with this, what is the norm for this, do all dog owners let them lick?..

We do yes. He provides a pre-wash before the plate goes in the dishwasher smile

Yeah, whats the problem with it? Going in the dishwasher afterwards so why not give the lil pooch a treat?

The problem is that the dog licks his arse and then the plate. You then pick up the plate to put in dishwasher. Effectively you've just wiped the dog's arse with your fingers/hand, touched the diswasher controls handle and probably other parts of the kitchen. You wife/family/children/friends then touch these parts of the kitchen and the lovely bugs get spread around.

Not at the table no, but when they're sitting in the dishwasher before it closes our Dobermann carries out the pre wash cycle (didn't realise it was such a popular phrase!).

Are you one of those suckers who buys the 99.9% dettol ste in the novelty 'wave-your-hand-dispenser'?

If it was such an issue, then licking the plates would be the least of my worries. Our dog licks my hands and my face without any issues at all.

Anyone who thinks it is unsanitary is basically admitting that they don't wash their plates properly.

That's very nice for you. I prefer to wash my hands several times a day, especially after I've been out working/shopping/etc. Takes a minute or two. While that might not sound very 'PH' fashionable, it's a simple investment in avoiding things that many others get and blame everything else apart from themselves.

Yeh, you're right. Eat take aways every day, lick your dogs arse and have a lovely time. PH is a place only for the tough guys over the last year or so. I forgot hygiene is for whimps, how silly of me.

I'd prefer to be a whimp than to potentially expose anyone to this. Guess where the cause of this came from? A lovely dog's arse:

as much to do with dog training and hierarchy ...same as not letting him/her on the sofa or on the bed

Ours don't do it everytime we eat, but sometimes if we've had something particularly saucy they will!

I have 4 staffordshire bull terriers, and none of them will ever eat from a plate, they eat from their own bowls, the reason being is that in my view they have to know what is what, other wise it can lead to problems. A friend has springers and the trouble they have with their 2 dogs fighting is IMO crazy its all down to them eating off plates and getting fed from the table.

I love my dogs, but at the end of the day they are just dogs, i would not be without them, and in some ways they are spolit, but sometimes blurring lines is asking for trouble.

Not this again. Plenty of people let their dogs on the sofa.

"Dogs... Know your place" hehe Not all of us treat our dogs as trainee soldiers.

Can I extend the topic slightly from plates to mugs.

We have pint mugs and our setters have both got a liking for coffee. They insist on having the end of the cup. I would argue that our dogs are probably a lot cleaner than some humans.

Back to the plate topic. Its good to keep something back to put in the dog bowls - ensures they eat up. The plate situation only usually happens in the 'pre-wash' cycle while the dishwasher is being filled.

My mother lets our dogs clean her enamel casserole pans etc - lot easier than cleaning the stuck on bits - does the job well, before the real clean cycle kicks in.

Even the title of the thread is enough to make me grimace. Actually reading any of the posts is unimaginable.
