Hi all, took my C0cker Spaniel out for his walk this morning & just after we got back I noticed his left eye was a bit red. Nothing unusual as he's always in amongst the undergrowth & frequently collecting thorns, brambles & scratches etc. A little later however it looks slightly swollen & still red, thinking he may have been bitten or stung.

Rang the Vet & unfortunately had missed surgery so will need to pay their emergency callout fee + whatever treatment they deem necessary.

Spoke to the Vet to see what the best thing to do was & decided to leave it and see if it improves / deteriorates but nothing much seems to have changed. Is it worth paying through the nose to be told its a scratch & there's not much they can do or shall I risk leaving it & hope it improves?

Only you can tell how bad the eye looks - if it was a risk of going blind then through to nose it would be for me (is he insured?).

It's not that bad really so no real danger I don't think. I would never risk his health because of money (spent over £1800.00 saving his life a few years ago) but equally I'm not keen to throw money away! And no, he isn't insured.

Well if it doesn't look that bad then it's not the end of the world. If possible though in your shoes I'd consider insurance (some of them also have a vet nurse help line - though perhaps bex will be along shortly to help!).

Happens all the time with my Cockers.
Human eye drops are pretty effective as a stop gap.
Give it at least 24 hours. Usually it will be ok after that.
If there is something stuck in there the dog will be pawing at the eye.
If the eyeball is scratched it will take far longer to heal and will need a vet's advice.

Hopefully it's nothing serious. (It usually isn't.) smile

If it's a bite or a sting you can give him an antihistamine tablet such as Piriton, which should help smile
