Edit: He's a Britsh Bulldog!

We were given details of a Bulldog that is looking for a good home. We went to see him, and he's adoreable. We think he's about 18 months old and has been checked over by a vet, with no bad news. He's a bit on the shabby side, but nothing a good bath and some TLC won't cure. We know nothing about these guys so was wondering if anyone knew what we should look out for. He's gonna be a play mate for our Pug! He currently has 3 Pug room-mates and they all get on well and he has the nicest temprement (SP?) you could hope for, which is surprising as we were told he was resvued from a dog-fighting establishment.

Many thanks.

There's one that lives just around the corner from me, the last time I met her she was more interested in being friendly/getting fussed/playing silly buggers than the ice creams treat on offer from her owners.

For such a small dog they have a huge personality.

Your post made me google images of them...as this guy is not small!!! I think he's a British Bulldog.....and his name is well deserved....Tank!

French bulldogs and Boston Terriers I can see being the next fashionable breed, especially in towns if the current explosion in their numbers in the states is anything to go by...

I have a french bulldog and an english bulldog. They are both fantastic breeds, both of mine are therapy dogs and visit local schools. They love everyone and everything and are very easy going and easy to care for. Both breeds can have their health issues and could potentially run up big vet bills if they have a pre-existing conditions (if you take in an 18 month old and took out pet insurance it probably wouldn't cover any thing that is already wrong). I have been pretty lucky with my two, and both were rehomed by me when they were about 6 months old (due to their original homes suffering marriage break ups), the frenchie is now 5 1/2 and the English bullie is now 2 1/2.

I love the name Tank! A few things to watch out for: What is his skin like? bullies can suffer really badly with skin issues - look for red inflamed skin or bare patches on his fur. It can be almost impossible to fix some of these skin issues you just end up managing them instead of curing them. Watch out for breathing issues, snoring is unavoidable (!) but some bullies struggle with anything above a short walk and have real difficulties in the heat. I keep Spike quite trim, he is actually slightly underweight for his breed but he does really well as a result and loves to go for long rambling walks with no issues, he can also build up quite a bit of speed if he spots something to chase. I am careful with his diet and he gets lots of exercise, bullies will happily be couch potatoes if you let them. Spike seems to have two speeds - full of beans and fast asleep! Final thing I would watch for is how is he with other dogs? Most bullies love people but some can be grumpy with other dogs and this can be a pain when you take them out and about. Is he used to children? Why does he need a new home? If he is ex breeding stock he may have been kept outside in a kennel, and if this is the case he may not be housetrained, they can usually be housetrained successfully and he is still quite young, but it is something to be aware of and check out before you take him home and allow his to run free round your house!
Good luck! Taking on my two 'rescue' bulldogs has been the best thing I have ever done.

Thanks mate, very helpful. Ours is a similar colour to yours, and has a few patches of that red skin you refer to. It's almost like he's been sunburnt.
We understnad that someone took him away from a dog fighting kennel/club and we got him from them. He is probably the ugliest dog I have ever seen, but he's just gorgeous, and his behaviour is something else. The pug won't leave him alone and he's only reacted once, with a little growl and a snap...but it was deserved.
My god the're strong eh? Mrs C was having a cuddle on the floor with him, and he was pushing her around the room!
He's at the vets today to get a thorough MOT, and the rescue lady had him chopped, vaccinated and chipped.
Fully housetrained as well, which is handy given what he leaves behind.

We both love him to bits, and are being careful not to favour either dog.

Cheers.

Ahhhhh he sounds like a real sweetie and it also sounds like the lucky boy has landed on his feet. They certainly are strong and quite stubborn so it pays to do some training and stick to it - fortunately our Spike has proven to be the most obedient and easily trained of all the dogs we have lived with (we had two boxers in the past before the frenchie and bullie came along).
I'd love to see a photo of him with his new pug buddy when you get chance biggrin

Awwwww Welcome to the bullie world!!!

Theyre just fantastic creatures on they!

A book i would HIGHLY recommend to you is 'The bulldog bible' Is is just a fantastic read, and all written in layman terms as opposed to breeder/showing terms if that makes sense!
