Can I ask what type of rock you have there?Im in the process of setting up a malawi tank atm and have not decided on the aqua scaping yet.
Do you have any cleanup crew in there like shrimps or plecs?
one thing i never liked about cichlid tanks was they lack interest. most people tend to build them with just rock dull in my opinion.

Looks like ocean rock to me. Same stuff that we've used:It's brilliant white when you put it in, but unfortunately doesn't stay that way for long, even with a big plec and some nerite snails grazing on it. I'm thinking of taking pieces out and pressure washing them.

another amazing shot, is the pic like that because of the style of the photo from the camera, or does it look like that in the flesh
id imagine they would look just as good. here's a non-studio photo. looks just as stunning to me.http://www.adana-usa.com/index.php?main_page=afa_p...
There are some beautiful examples of the genre on that site. I was so impressed that I did a little research and found a company in Wrexham(?) which deals in this type of set up.
I'm seriuosly thinking of getting involved again in this hobby and these 'aqua forest' setups would be the way I would like to go.
Hre's another beautiful example of this style of aquarium.
Some really nice photos in the thread so far.
I've got a few tanks -
- A 5 foot Discus (and others) tank
- A 3 foot discus Breeding Tank
- A Cherry Shrimp Breeding tank
- A 3 foot Kribensis Breeding tank
Here's the 5 foot display tank:
Including lots of Discus, 14 clown loaches (my pride and joy!), loads of Corries, 60 neon and Cardinal Tetra, a few plecs, congo tetra etc etc
A video of the discus:

Yep its ocean rock. I used to keep marines in 6ft tank with the filter system in the garage below. Had the tank set up a reef tank but the pump failed and I lost the lot. Go the new effectline tank in, 2m - 750l and with some help from Sheffield Aquatics set up the system shown. Basically the two tanks, Malawi and planted tank feed into the filter. The idea is the plants not only look good but help remove nitrate from the Malawi tank. The set up also gives a very large surface area for O2 exchange which means you can keep more fish. However if anyone can hlp me with the problem I've got with filament type weed in the tank I'll be greatful. I've got 5 loaches in the Malawi tank but how do you stop them eating the snails?

I think loaches will always eat snails. I used to have a few bright yellow apple snails (really big) but as soon as I moved them into the tank with the clown loaches they were reduced to empty shells.. Your set up sounds amazing! When I move into the house that we're currently renovating I'm thinking of a similar thing - with 2 tanks running the same water in one big system.
I also thought about drilling the back of one tank, as an overflow which would run into the drain, then set up the cistern from a toilet in an upstairs room. Instead of taking ages to change the water I could just flush the cistern, which would run the new water into the tank, and the drilled tank would then allow the old water to flow away from the overflow...
Maybe a few cherry shrimp would sort the algae out? It depends what type it is, but shrimp are really good algae eaters.

Nerite snails will eat filamentous algae, but they've got no chance of not being eaten if loaches are present. L4MBOLUV3R said:
