It is hard to know when the right time is but when you know, you know.

Our beautiful girl Yana was diagnosed with severe kidney disease perhaps 4-5 months ago. She certainly wasn't her usual self but was still OK. She was off her food somewhat for a 7-10 days; worse than her usual diva self.

We watched her closely all morning last Wednesday and by lunchtime we knew the time was now.

Her final trip to the vet was at 17:00, she perked up and was her old usual self; even eating. The vets advice was it was addrenalin. We spent a fantastic final hour with her. Yes there were lots of tears but I walked out smiling safe in the knowledge that it was the right thing to do.

I say the right thing to do....

We lost one of our other cats earlier in the year. Yume had been battling a massive kidney stone for almost a year. He deteriorated so quickly over night. I will never forget the carnage in 'the cat room' that morning and watching him suffer for 3 hours. That is what happened in the end. After 14 years of friendship, I fell short at the last hurdle when he needed me most. I don't think I'll ever forgive myself.

Don't be that man.

PS I'd just add that there are vets that will come to your house to do it. More £ no doubt but might make it easier for all concerned.

Dammit. I should know better than to read things like this if I don’t want to pretend it’s suddenly dusty in here.

This is what we do. For dogs and cats, the vet comes out. They pass into spirit in the comfort of their own homes instead of a cold vet room that they do not know... It is more expensive but it also allows the other pets to smell the body once done and know what has happened, it prevents cats/dogs wandering around the house wondering where their pack mate has gone etc...

Is that true? Didn’t really think of that.
God forbid when the day comes, I’ve got a brother and sister pair of cats. One of them will wonder where the other has gone.

This…. 100%!!!

You can put an animal down ( dog in our case ) a week to early or a week to late….

Our vet came to the house… my wife held him as the vet did the job and then we let the other four dogs see him and understand what happened…. They’re not daft about these things!!

We had #1 Bengal PTS in 2021 and #2 didn't really pine (which was odd because they were brothers and house cats)

Last Thursday evening #2 fell ill. Vets this morning, tests done - phone call saying we need to do the best thing. He was 16 and we said goodbye in the vets garden (no cold room)

Just fking horrendous. Back home now to an empty house after taking him to be buried with his brother in Wales.

We are just totally and utterly frownfrown

Please put her out of her misery, she is obviously in pain and suffering,
We took our to the vets a couple of weeks ago and the vet said it was time and had already put a cannulae in although we really wanted her to be put to sleep at home but did it there and then to save her any more suffering

Our last cat suddenly starting "hiding" in odd places for a few days around the house, it was all very odd to me but then one morning he was by his cat flap unable to move, panting heavily, quick trip to the vets and he was gone within an hour.

It was absolutely heartbreaking for me if I am honest, working from home for 2+ years he was always around and I didn't realise how much it actually meant to me.

Fingers crossed OP you can get the help he needs or end his suffering quickly frown
This has just happened to us today. Not as sudden but everything else identical. Heart disease causing fluid build up externally around the lungs. Last 2 days very quiet. Last night I saw a marked change in her. I slept on the sofa so she knew I was near.

This morning I knew. 7.30 had her last breakfast. She had left us by 9 am

She was unfortunately quite a vocal cat. Always meowing at me for one thing or another. The house is very quiet and empty without her.

Sorry for your loss

It is heartbreaking when they go.

Thank you. Here she is in happier times. She was only 8.

Yes it’s not nice. My daughter set that pic as the Home Screen on my phone. Not sure that’s the greatest idea in the world tbh

Had the same with one of ours last year, but he was only 3. A heart defect that didn’t reveal itself until he was 2.

Only cat we’ve ever had insured - was “free” with initial check and my wife had just let it auto-renew. Credit to Petplan, they unhesitatingly paid out £4K in cat cardiology stuff.

We thought he’d just spend a lifetime on meds but apparently they quickly get less effective. We found him one morning in an odd place and he was very cold and barely alive. Vet was thankfully clear about what to do.

Yes sounds identical. First reared its head in April when I got up early one morning for work. She was out all night murdering things. As soon as she saw the lights come on she was up. Stood in front of me panting like a dog as if to say I need your help

She was also insured. Unfortunately by me. They drained 330 ml from her chest. On meds. Drained her again 2 weeks ago. Then she simply fell off a cliff.

Panting was the first thing we noticed - he’d been charging around and we thought he was just over-excited.

Yes a bad end if you don’t act. Our vet said that her heart had gone soft. Without intervention all her organs would have shut down and it’s a painful death

Saying yes to putting Luna to sleep was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

Cats keep their eyes closed and also purr when in pain. Luna was purring when she was put to sleep.

It was dusty on the way home.
