Well this is st!!!

15years old, he is stting everywhere and lost weight over the last 3 months. Had bloods and stools which indicate nothing.

Everything is a litter tray. And hes lost the plot...do I just book him in? Poor fella stinks and is looking rough...

Guess we all suck it up at this stage? I've just not done it before..

What has the vet said? Be guided by them as to whether or not there is anything you can do to make him better. If not, no matter how hard, and it is, you have to do the best for him. You will take comfort from doing the right thing eventually if it comes to it.

When our 17 year old Jack Russell was starting to decline fast we asked the vet about termination. He said “you will know when the times come” he was absolutely correct - we had another four weeks with our dog. And then it was clear to all the family that we had to act immediately.

What I’m saying to you at this difficult time is that you will hopefully know when it’s time. The final decline is sudden

Screaming in agony - time to put the thing out of its misery. I hope someone does this for me before I get to that stage.

Best of luck OP. Tough time, but do the right thing for the animal.

It sucks but at least they have the choice, or rather, someone who loves em looking out for their best interests has the choice.

This for every sentence above.
Not sure it gets much easier each time though.
Other than accidents ( cats run over ) I’ve just quickly thought about that call and I think our total is 4 Cats, 4 Dogs and 1 Horse over 37 years.
You know when it’s time.
Sorry to read your post.

Cheers guys,

Was " lucky" with his brother a few years back, quick decline and we found him dead in his bed.

Been finding him in very strange places hiding around the house in the last 48hr and read that they take themselves off to die in private.

I'd honestly prefer to do a quick 12 bore while he's snoring than the cat box/ howling trip to the vet...

1st world problems hey!

I'm trying to unravel this. So you took him to the vet - what did the vet recommend? What is the current state of play?

We lost our 18 year old cat last month, he'd been old and raggedy for years but in good health, but in the last week he declined. Stopped eating and looked really frail.

Had to make that awful decision (still find it hard to think/talk about) and found Caroline:

https://www.pallivet.co.uk/

Who came the next day and sent him on his way with dignity and none of that horrible trip to the vets that must be so distessing for them and none of that walking out with an empty cat-box.

Good luck, it's horrible.

An awful thing to be going through frown

Hits very close to home given my two are 15.5 years old, luckily at the moment both seem happy and healthy, but all these stories of 'rapid decline' makes me nervous.

Our last cat suddenly starting "hiding" in odd places for a few days around the house, it was all very odd to me but then one morning he was by his cat flap unable to move, panting heavily, quick trip to the vets and he was gone within an hour.

It was absolutely heartbreaking for me if I am honest, working from home for 2+ years he was always around and I didn't realise how much it actually meant to me.

Fingers crossed OP you can get the help he needs or end his suffering quickly frown

You have my sympathies, it's a horrible time when you know what needs to be done.

I made the decision to put my beloved Zelda to sleep last year, he was 19 and whilst what I would call fit and healthy I'd noticed that he had pretty mush stopped eating anything I put in front of him (and I tried a lot of things), was drinking less and losing a lot of weight. I always swore I'd never let him suffer, he'd had a great long life so I simply called the vets and made an appt for the following morning. It was the single worst day of my life so far, but even looking back now I don't regret the timing or decision at all.

They're your pet, as long as you're clear minded (which isn't easy), you know them best especially when they get older.

Sadly all she's done is prolong the cat's agony; it not fixable and it's not going to get better. Sometimes you have to park emotion, listen to the vet (who's decision-making capability isn't wrecked by emotion), and do the best for the cat. It's already gone on too long.

Seriously, take the poor critter back now, do the decent thing for it and take the pain, agony and distress away without more delay.

bugger frown

had to do this with my old cat 10 years ago now - luckily for me (because I am a wimp) my, now, wife took Spike on his last trip. A really st feeling BUT the reality is that it had to be done for the poor fella as he was in pain and incontinent weeping

I feel for you OP, it’s not easy to determine the right time.

My 16 year old cat had similar in May last year. Vet couldn’t really figure anything out, so after a week I made the decision on the basis of what I felt was best for her, and not us. Kids were wrecked, although we’d prepared them and they’d spent loads of time with her that week which helped.

Simple phone call to the vet and they were excellent. Appointment within the hour and very sensitive.

Turned out afterward that she’d gone into liver failure, and no amount of treatment would have help, only prolonged her suffering.

Best wishes. Go with your gut.
