is this chair worth anything?
Discussion
Hi,
Having watched too much phil and kirsty i found this in a skip today which i thought was rather cool. I would like to refurbish it and re-cover cheaply. Before i ruin it for ever is there any way of telling if its worth anything? ie what to look for to date it? Its solid wood and the underneath is tacked on so its def not ikea! It was in a skip outside some v posh manor houses so theres hope it could be of value. Even if not will look awesome done up imho.
thanks

Looks nice.
Have a look at how the parts are joined, if screws then it's probably not old and a repro, if you can just see wood plugs (hiding old screws) and glued joints it becomes a little more interesting, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is worth money and old but the signs are better.
Even if a repro it's worth £30 or more to someone who wants one!

When's the antique roadshow near you?
I would say ( without any knowledge whatsoever) that it's probably worth a fiver to someone that wants it...or is skip material
Check out your local college for evening classes in upholstery, and they might take it on as a project....will probably cost you £50 to learn/attend a few weeks though

Over 20 years ago when I bought my first house I acquired some similar chairs for next to nothing with solid hardwood frames which I re-upholstered in various fabrics. Felt a bit of a ponce at the time buying nice furniture material, but they are still going strong and mainly still look good. A couple need re-doing but that's because of 2 children and multiple spills, the frames are solid. Do it well and they will be worth more to you than the cost. It's not difficult to do, take it easy and make sure you have the proper materials/tools.
Hello there, I know this is old but just saw it.
Your chair isn't a repo, the number underneath will be a marking for the section of the frame, to help the maker put it together. As for costs I would charge you about £150-200 ( depending on how busy I was ) to reupholster it. If you wanted the frame repolished it would cost about £150+, just a clean and wax probably about £70-80 ( I would just do that to be honest )
Cost when restored, in our Hatch end shop, I would wack a price of about £350-400 if it looked really smart. You can see why the arse has dropped out of antiques, just not worth spending all that time on restoring to make a couple of quid on top for it to sit in a shop for a month or two, more profitable to do restoration for others.
You won't make any money out of it doing it up your self, but you will save money compared to buying a swish done up model for a puker dealer ( be prepared to put a lot of hours into it ), choose your fabric wisely and you could have a smart chair there, just don;t think your going to "wack" a cover over it, it isn't easy to get them right and not have them look like a bags of spanners.
