We've had to demolish an outside staircase due to damp and I'm trying to work out what to replace it with. My builder is suggesting wood but I can't find any decent pictures on the web to give me an idea what it would look like.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to look? I'd consider a metal staircase as long as it didn't look like a fire escape.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe a stone staircase then?
If thats out of budget, how about a steel one, sat fittings, to give it an appearnce of a period wrought iron staicase?

I thought of stone earlier but didn't reckon the house was suitable. But it is, so stone it has to be!

We had a stone staircase originally (and still have the stone following demolition). I'd ideally like to recreate it in stone, but the trouble is that the stone was creating the damp problems.

Thanks for the replies - any pictures of non-stone outside staircases? I'm struggling to find any.

Can you rebuild it in stone, but fit a DPM between the stairs and the house wall?

Secondary - the main staircase will be inside. The living accomodation is upside down so if you were having guests for dinner, they'd come in through the outside staircase perhaps.

Possibly. Not sure why my builder wouldn't have suggested it (cost?) but will ask!

Should be easy. Concrete base with DPM. Painted on "liquid bitumen" with DPM where the stairs but to the wall.

If the building was listed you would probably have to use stone anyway.
