Where can I get some timber in 144x24x2.5cm dimensions? Needs to be quite smooth as I will be staining it.

Jewsons? B&Q suck.

Just noticed that I've used the wrong timber in the title. Funnily enough the wood is for speaker stands!

Try your local timber yard or preferably a local joiners shop who can machine to your exact dimensions. diy such as B&Q is a no go

Are all your dimensions in cm?

If so, I see no reason why a local merchant shouldnt be able to help.

I assume you want the length to be 1440mm & the finished size of the timber to be 25 x 240mm? If this is the case ask any decent merchant for 1.5mtr lengths of 32 x 250mm prepared softwood, which will finish at roughly what you want but its a very wide board so be aware it may be a low quality whitewood or even a laminated board.

Alternatively get 25mm ply or MDF cut to size.

All following dimentions in cm and in the LxWxD format

What I'm after is 4 pieces of wood.

2 pieces 30x20x2.5

2 pieces 36x24x2.5

Really need wood rather than ply or MDF as I want to stain the wood to match other furniture.

Any merchant should be able to help with the first item, the second might not be so easy. But do keep in mind you only want a pratfull so you might find them a little resistant to go out of their way for such a small order.

Might be worth checking a local joinery shop for some offcuts.

I fear that panels of that size, if from a single piece of timber, will shrink, cup and possibly warp unevenly to a massive extent. Either they need to be laminated up from smaller peices, balanced, so that the movement is limited or, in my view the preferred option, use veneered MDF with matching edges - it can be stained up to suit and should not move. Unless you can find an offcut from a joinery shop, you'll need to buy a complete sheet (2440x1220mm) but it's likely to be cheaper than finding a joinery shop to laminate up and prepare a panel from solid timber.
