I think I got this.

Buy the underlay online, probably cloud 9
get a local fitter to do the fitting and supply grippers

question is where to get the carpet?

i know the big shops on the retail stores charge huge amounts on underlay to make up for lower carpet prices - but would an independent be able to beat them on price or not?

the carpet i want is appro 17sqm at carpet right - will a local be able to match it or are CR generally cheap for the actual carpet?

Why not go into your local carpet shop and ask them for the supply only price for the carpet you want?

I will, just wanted a general idea of whether it was actually worth it.

Local independent should be able to beat the bigger chain stores on price.

They will probably charge more per sq m for the carpet but then throw in the extras such as grippers/carpet disposal etc that Carpet Right etc add on

Most local places will beat Carpet right by a large amount. They aren't known for their cheapness so it'll be worth while going to a few locals.

Was actually looking in there a while back. They had a new large display of carpet samples, quite liked these two;

Thoughts?

Jst went down to a local shop

They tell me its ahrd to cmapre the big multi stores to small oens as they rebrand all their carpets

he could do be Abidgdon SAVANNAH STAIN FREE for £13smq which looked good enough - i can now compare it with other similar shops.

An update

Supplier 1 can do the carpet I want for £13

I phone another shop up who can do it £12. They have it advertised for £16 initally

I phone another one who is a bit annoyed that the other peopel can get it for that low a price as £12 is apparently below cost price for him

I phone another who are rude and pretty much tell me to get lost when I enquire about spply only!

Another one do it at £19.99. May offer a discount but doesnt give figures as boss not available.

Phone another and am offered it 12.50 a metre or £9 a metre if I order a full roll of 120sqm. I actually need 100 so it works out cheaper buying a full roll. He will cut it up and deliver it for me FOC.

Phone another who can just do it £9 a sqm regardless of quantity

So overall there doesnt seem to be much consistency in pricing.

But won't it work out to be just as cheap for one of those local suppliers to fit it aswell, rather than having to find a separate fitter and pay him?

Whatever you do, don't buy carpet made from polypropylene fibres unless you want a constant stream of static shocks and filthy carpets in a few years. Wool is by far the better proposition and thats why your two choices are such different prices. Wool will outlast artificial fibres by a ratio of 2 to 1 I would say. In thirty years of homeowning I have NEVER had to replace worn out 100% wool carpet.

staining is a big issue for me, sees polypropolene is better equipped to handle it than wool.........?

Ours is a very high football house so we need something that will look good as long as possible.

TBH I would be urprised if any relativley affordable carpet could last more than 5 years and remain looking good.
