We live in 1800's cottage that is attached to another 'house'. The electricity supply for both houses was modified several years ago to come out of the ground rather than via a pole. The supplies now come out of the ground at the base of our side wall, our supply goes straight into the meter but there is an armoured cable for next door that goes up our side wall, along a valley on our roof and down part of another wall before it enters next door.

The problem is, our end wall has been pebble dashed at some point and we want to replace it with normal render. Are we allowed to undo the clips holding next doors cable to the side of our house so we can re-render?

To complicate it further, near the top of our wall there is a join in next doors cable which looks pretty poor to me. Should I just complain to the power supplier that I don't like the look of it and think they should replace the lot? Would it cost me or next door or no-one?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Wouldn't the easiest thing to do be to talk to your neighbours about this first?

They probably won't mind what you do with your wall, and the connection will be either their or the elec co's responsibility. Doesn't sound expensive either way.

Don't fall out with your neighbours, would be my main advice. Oh, and don't fall out with your neighbours.

I'd try to avoid falling out with my neighbours too. wink

Good advice on neighbours. Thing is we get on very well (they're the only neighbours we've got) - they used to live in our house before they moved next door!
I'm just wondering if contacting the elec co could unearth a big cost to either of us. I don't want to start the ball rolling with them without knowing if that's likely. I'm wary that if I do contact the elec co then the whole thing gets unstoppable.

Shouldn't cost you a penny,it's your wall, their cable,if they get a bit bolshy tell them you want a payment from them for using your wall, I can understand you don't want to upset the neighbours, but it is the resposibility of the power company.

I draw £31.00 a year for having a pole in a field I own.

Cables, pipes and services are usually your responsibility only on your side of the meter. With some exceptions: your sewage pipes are yours until they physically leave your property. However, I don't think electricity works like that.

Why not ask your neighbour what they think if you get on well with them? Electrical work isn't normally that dear anyway, compared with, say, drains or water supply, so even if one of you does end up paying it may not be much. smile

I have just been in a similar situation.

Semi with the supply cable running coming out of the ground and up/round the back of our house feeding next door.

We are having an extension shortly and had to move the meter. As part of the meter move they took the external clipped to the wall cables down and laid a new cable in the ground to feed the neighbours.

That part of the job cost nothing to either us or th neighbours. meter move was £520 thoughfrown

If you explain to the utility co that you are planning some building work and the cable is in the way they should move it for nothing. With a bit of luck.

Thanks folks. I think I'll see what the elec co have to say. We had a builder round to do a quote on the rendering and some other work and he wasn't too keen on the cable either.
Funnily enough a cheque has arrived addressed to our neighbour (but at our house - his old house!) from the elec co for having their supply (next door) on our land !! Coincidence or what? It's for a whole £5 !!!!
