Just picked the forst of my cherry tomatoes, they were all fine on the plant, but now I've washed them left them sat in the collander for half an hour most of them have split, some in several places. Is that normal? I'm sure they didn't do that last year

I'm not an expert by any means, but I think that's a sign they didn't get enough water when they were growing.

Certainly true if they are splitting on the vine but I've never heard of them splitting after they are picked.

Splitting usually caused by inconsistent watering, trying to make up for not watering the previous day for example.

Can't say I've ever heard of after picking though.

One plant's outside so should be plenty we enough, the other is in the greenhouse but on an automatic watering system so usually consistent watering. I did give them am extra couple of litres last night with some tomorite though, so I guess that could contribute if they'd split on the vine, not after picking though

Outside tomatoes also need watering daily, they are heavy drinkers! Indeed it's almost impossible to over water tomatoes

They've been watered daily, just not by me. Ground hasn't really been dry for a week or more round here.

Yep - mine have done that too.

Look lovely on the vine and split after washing. Most annoying. No idea why though.
