I'd like to install a sliding five bar gate, hinged is no good as the drive and front garden are wider than they are deep and a gate swinging inward would block access. My first choice was a portcullis but apparently
rolleyes the Council won't allow it.

Remote control is more or less essential as we're close to a corner and I don't fancy leaving a car in the road while I hop out, it'll be a matter of time before someone hits it. The fact that gate controllers fitted to vehicles sometimes interfere with speed radar is also coincidental smile

The power supply can be run 40'-50' from the garage although this will entail cutting into the asphalt. I suppose I could run a conduit along the fence but at some point the wire will have to cross to the other side of the drive anyway.

I'm guessing the motor and controls will need to be mounted in a weatherproof box set on a concrete base and steel plates for some wheels/rollers will need to be set across the driveway entrance.

What have I missed?

i think you will truggle with approval.
DESPITE the fact its powered, the council/highways johnnies are gonna reckon on you creating a hazard...... pulled up waiting for the gates to open (unles you have a 12ft deep drive to pull up off the road onto while they do open.)
Especially a you are on a corner !!!!

You need planning approval to put up a gate?! (Google) Well I'll be buggered.

I've seen gates fitted to neighbouring properties with no sign of any planning application. I can't imagine it would be that difficult. Ah well, off to the planning office in the morning.
