Planted some Bhut Jolokia (sp?) seeds a few months ago and the plants are now about 10 inches high. They have sprouted quite a few yellow flowers which I assumed would turn into chilis. However, came home today and 5 of the flowers have fallen off just one of the plants. Not just the flower heads, but at the stem? Are they dying? Should I feed the plant? At present I just water them. Cheers

Are they drying out or getting too much sun? Both of these seem to upset my chillis, they are now in a bright protected spot with little direct sunlight and are much happier.

Cheers Shaolin. They are on the window sill so maybe. Having said that I potted some out on the garden, and although those ones aren't as big as the ones on the sill, they have flowers which haven't fallen off?!?

Some plants drop their flowers if they aren't pollinated. Get yourself an artist's paintbrush and make like an insect. Been doing it in my greenhouse for weeks and now have all sorts growing. Including chilles.

As Flintstone says, the flowers drop off if pollination hasn't occurred. My Bolivian Rainbow Chilli was moved outside when the weather got warmer so that wind could pollinate the flowers. Have quite a good showing of chilli's

Righty-Ho.
about 6 of my nine Bhut Jolokia plants are now showing nice sized chillis, green in colour.
What next? Do I just wait until they turn red, pick them off and eat them?
Or do I have to let them ripen some more once theyve been picked?
Cheers

Once they've ripened on the plant I don't think there's any reason to wait for the to ripen further, in fact when I've tried to keep fresh chillis in the past they've always started going rotten.

I normally pick them and freeze them straight away, then just use them from frozen for cooking. I've never tried drying them out instead of freezing them but plenty of my friends do and they seem happy enough with the method.

Generally speaking chillies and peppers (capsicum) become sweeter as they ripen so red ones will be hotter than yellow which are hotter than red. It's all relative though. A red Scotch Bonnet will still have the roof of your mouth off biggrin

got a bag of red/yellow/green scotch bonnets in the freezer, tend to cut one up, usually with the seeds if want to give the soup a bit of flavouring smile

just getting the second crop of jalapenos on my plant. It's been mainly on a sunny windowsill since May but I put it out in the garden on sunny days to pollenate. I should get about 10 more fruits from it.

I like this game.

I've used chillies off my plants for several years. Red = sweeter (minus the seeds of course).

But you do have a Tuscan in Chameleon Green which is my favourite colour.

So let me get this right. Chameleon Green is hotter than Chameleon Red, right?
