Above is a link to British Gas's latest offer and they are coming over tomorrow (they must be quiet as I called them 10 mins ago, and they'll be here this time tomorrow!)

Any strong feelings re BG for people here?

My existing boiler a 15+ yr old Ferolli is weeping from a pipe up underneath somewhere, regularly losing pressure and tonight making a bad wheezing noise. At this age I reckon she must be due for renewal...would that figure, or should there be life in the ol' gal yet?

Your thoughts are appreciated!

British Gas? For boilers?
rofl
Even with 1/3 off, they'll still be wanting to charge loads extra for powerflushing, thermostatic rad valves, flue, and god knows what else.
Have a go at finding a good local plumber - try plumbers merchants for recommendations if you don't know anyone with a recent happy plumber experience.
Read on here or DIYnot/screwfix/etc to research peoples opinions of decent brands.

Agreed, find a decent local plumber.

British Gas will try and sell you every extra under the sun. Magna-clean, TRVs, programmable room stats, they are beneficial, but not essential.

If you are having a new boiler, your heating system may need upgrading. I'm pretty sure the latest requirements are TRVs on bedroom radiators at least and time and temperature control for heating.

Make sure the quote includes a powerflush, this is essential for a new boiler. Also your new boiler will be condensing so you will need to run a pipe to a foul water drain. Make sure he runs it in 1 1/4" outside to prevent it freezing, some installers are still running overflow pipe outside.

My mate got a £7K quote from BG for combi plus 7 new rads, after a bit of haggling they went to £6K. He paid £2.5K from a local plumber for the same thing.

The word seems to be Vailliant or Worcester Bosch.

I got a BG flyer recently.

It said something like:

Call out fee: £0
Parts: £0
Total: £13

Yep, that's BG! Must've been taking tips from BT, who are masters at offering free things for only £14.99 pcm.

BG came over tonight as a starting point and I have a quote that I'd like some guidance on with please from a non biased point of view.

I called 5 local people today...only one called me back so far! 2nd guy coming over tomorrow pm.

Anyone able to make a genuine recommendation to my area pls? I live a couple of miles from Kidderminster, Worcs. Thanks.

BG have put this to me: (Prices rounded)

Glowworm Flexicom 30cx £880.00
Fitting (same location-easy) £1200.00
Mini expansion vessel. £71.00
Wireless thermostat £145.00
Horizontal flue £215.00
Internal condensate conn. £75.00
Powerflush & water treat £435.00
Magnetic system filter £223.00
TRV's £60.00 ea. (Quoted me for 12, but will prob. need about 6)

So there you have it. Lots for you to get in to! I see from a FAQ here that glowworm was on the 'dubious' list?

Look forward to your comments/thoughts.

Go for the Worcester Bosch. Have a look on the website for approved installers in your area.

I used a freelance plumber and sourced my Worcester Bosch 28i myself with mechanical timer and flue etc. The whole thing was fitted for about £1,200.

The boiler was covered by a 2 year warranty (which they have had to honour twice by the way - bit disappointing) as long as it's fitted by a Corgi registered engineer.

BG got right up my nose when they came around and quoted about 3 times what I paid. I wouldn't touch 'em with a barge pole.

Just buy the parts required yourself from a plumbing/heating merchants, save yourself a wedge.
You'll get the boiler cheaper than that, as for quality of the Flexicom im not sure. They look quite neat but not had a chance to really work on any yet.
The fitting price they gave you is a joke. If the boilers going in the same position as the old one then its just a matter of altering the pipes to tie up with the new boiler connection valves. Shouldn't take more than a day and could be done for half what they've quoted.
Mini expansion vessel? Why the fk you would need this i don't know? Boilers come with an expansion vessel already attached.
Got a wireless stat at home fitted and i paid £70 for it. Again they're charging double.
Flue kit sounds to be about double as well.
Magnetic system filter, not required! If your getting a powerflush done the inhibitor will be added to system afterwords to stop it sludging up. Have you got a magnetic filter currently? So why get one now?
TRV's are about £15 each.
As i said buy the lot yourself then just get a local heating engineer to fit it all. Make sure the engineer is Gas Safe registered.

Probably time I told my BG story.

when we moved into this house we needed a new heating system, quite simply the old one was not up to the job and I was going to throw in a couple more bathrooms.

I'm happy to plumb the wet stuff but obviously cannot go near gas. I'm also happy to take advice from the experts.

So in come BG and they quote for a boiler but also say it requires the pipework changing from 15mm to 22mm in a lot of the run to improve flow. And that given the new pipework it will require moving from the kitchen to the bathroom.

So we agree on a price and in they come to install. Lots of pipework arrives, as does the boiler, and they start to drill the flue hole, then whack the boiler in and say "all done mate".

None of the pipework was used, turns out the flow out of the boiler is 15mm so there is no point in putting 22mm pipe in. This means there was no need to move the boiler in the first place. Oh and tey forgot to earth bond any pipework.

So, I complain and we have a comical conversation about the amount they are going to compensate me. Did you know that not only do they charge you to install the system but they charge an installation fee per metre of pipework. So in effect you pay twice.

Lessons learnt, and this year whenmy new place gets plumbed I will be using a local indy, three quotes and all that good stuff.

if you don;t want to source the parts yourself - get an independent gas fitter to do it for you.

Corgi is no longer relevant, they have to be 'gas safe' these days (the new corgi!)
http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/

go on webpage, pop in your postcode and it should list gas safe installers in your area. Give couple a bell, tell them what prices you have seen products for (as my post above) and get them to quote you...don't even bother mentioning BG! fitter should be happy to get the products for you (just have rough idea what prices are..)

Boilers - Valiant and Bosch seem to be highly recommended we have a 30cdi for 5 bed detached/2bathrooms and it's more than adequate..

good luck - that will be £50 please..

We paid about the same as that.

we have called WB out to fix as it wouldn't stay fired, turned out to be the mixer upstairs bleeding though cold/hot so wasn't drawing enough to keep the boiler going. Fortunatley didn't get charged biggrin

Thanks, I'll make them my last call.

Had my first independant out today. Local and well respected. He quoted me about half of what BG did and I am confident in him. I have 2 others booked in to look (turning into a circus act here) and I'll give these guys above a call too. Cheers all.

We have had loads problems with a brand new Worcester Bosch boiler in a rental property. Every year, something goes wrong and I would never buy Worcester Bosch again.

Interestingly, our commercial landlord had the office building boiler replaced by a non-local plumber who only fits Viessmann boilers to rental properties as they have a 5 year warranty and never go wrong. According to him, they don't discount much and with the 5 year warranty, not all plumbers will recommend them.

We are currently having an extension done and have changed to a Viessmann (from Ferroli)- shower is now 100% stronger and whilst it's early days, I am happy to have made the move.

The plumber that did the job is a mate of the builders who are truly excellent so if you need a local plumber. let me know as I am Worcester based.

BG are having your pants down!!!!!
what size house have you? as the lower end worcester bosh are expensive and not the best value for the money you pay for the name.top of the range are very good if you have a huge property . i dont install them!!
every plumber you ask will reccommend a different boiler!!!
baxi or potterton gold are very good mid range, vaillant are better but more expensive
you shouldnt pay much more than £1100 for boiler flue etc and £850 for the swap
hope this helps
