They should be the same size (assuming they're both normal UK items).

Is the OP from New Zealand?

The size term "Queen" isn't used much in the UK, but it's the same as a standard double - 4'6" wide.

I always think of double as 4'6", queen as 5', and king as 6' - don't know how that translates into metric (says she, showing her age...)

You've always thought wrong then!

In the UK, standard double & queen are the same size at 4'6". King size is 5'.

Not according to matey's diagram it isn't...

It would be much simpler to use the actual widths, eg 'I'd like a 5' mattress please' rather than a Magnum, Double Buffalo, Fruitbat etc.

It's a recipe for bruised shins. I know this from experience.

That diagram is from Sealy's NZ website. They have unique sizes. Sealy UK doesn't even bother with such an illustration.

Sorry, I thought it was all universal !

We sleep on a pull out sofa bed, our 8 month old has the bedroom, so count yourself lucky !

Must find a house to move to quick style.

There's even a specific wikipedia page on bed sizes, and NZ has it's own section! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bed_size
