Hi folks,

I am looking for some fast growing plants (maybe conifers?) Not too sure about the Leylandii route, was wondering if anyone had any other bright ideas?

thanks

As long as you don't let the Leyland get higher than you can cut and trim yourself, once a year, they are fast growing and can be kept pretty neat at any height.

Of course, if you just let it go it for a few years it will become a nuisance and get to the point where it is a major job to reduce the height, and trimming will just expose brown areas.

That is true for most conifers, saying that, but let go, Leyland will go faster.

Similar topic recently threw up Russian vine and eucalyptus as suggestions but apparently can quickly become a pest.

Eucalyptus isn't a pest, but some varieties can grow very big surprisingly fast, so make sure it's not going to cause any problems when it get to 50 feet high with an 18" trunk!

True. I have one and trim it mercilessly every year, so it looks like a stick. 2 months later its a bushy tree again.

How much space do you have and what height do you want? Cherry laurel - Prunus laurocerasus will do a better job than Lleylandii in many situations, it will also need trimming back but will sprout green from brown wood if it's cut back hard.

'pends what you want it for. Common hazel (Coryllus Avellana) grows at a rate of knots and you can cut it back as hard as you like.
