Paving around a rigid pond

Any tips on paving around the edge of this pond? Have Googled and looked in a couple of books but I cant find much that is really helpful. I was thinking of making the "trough" around the edge a bit deeper and broader, tamping it down and then putting mortar in the trough and under the rim of the liner. Most advice I've read just says to overlap the lip by a few inches. But one "expert" says that the paving should overlap, but not touch the liner. I'd have thought it would be pretty tough to do that and make the paving secure

How big that roughly, doesn't look that big which means you shouldn't find it too much of a problem. I'd fill it and let it settle and make sure it is absolutely level, there is nothing worse than having a couple of inches of liner showing around half of the rim. Then as you say, I'd back fill that edge and lay some stone edging around it, for a slightly more natural look you could set one layer of stone in line with the edge of the liner and then lay the final stone edging on top of that and set in by a couple of inches. That way you will see stone under stone rather than green plastic lining, if you see what I mean.

Thanks. Not that big - about 7ft by 4ft. I was mainly concerned about exactly where the mortar goes, or doesn't go. Perhaps I'm over-complicating things.
