Need to hire a skip - thinking either 4 cubic yard midi skip or 6 cubic yard. Mostly garden waste (rotten trellis or 2, remains of a pond, grass cuttings, a bit of rubble & earth).

A couple of things - don't want it on the drive unless it is on planks of wood or something, will it be ok parked on the road? We want same day drop off/collection so presumably won't need any cones or lights. It's a wide residential road with little traffic.

Also, what sort of money are we looking at for same day turnaround? None of the websites even have ballpark figures and I don't want to start ringing around until I have some sort of idea what I'm after...

Part of thinks a one-day hire should be cheaper as they then have it back for re-hire...

I hired a skip a couple of weeks ago for some garden clearance. 4 yard skip, had it on the drive. You'd need a permit to have it on the road. The price was the same no matter how long I wanted it for since to them the cost is in the disposal not so much the transport or the time you have it. Was 90 quid plus VAT.

Not sure whether you'll get a same day service. The impression I got was that they book you in for "dropping off" day and the lorry gets to you when it gets to you depending on how many other jobs he's got on that day and where they are. Same for picking up day.

This, you will need to apply and pay for a permit to have it on the street - our council wanted at least 30 days notice then they have only so many permits, so book well in advance.

Much better idea to put it on the drive on planks of wood. We don't have a drive so borrowed a twin axled trailer and did two round trips to the tip.

One other thing - don't underestimate how heavy a wheelbarrow full of earth is. Get a skip with a door or have some planks to make a ramp or else prepare to do a lot of back breaking lifting and tipping with someone.

Thanks guys - been getting online quotes of nearly £300! I think they think I want to buy it not hire it...

At the moment I'm considering hiring the cheapest SWD transit I can find and making a couple of trips to the tip. Will I get turned away in a van as trade waste?

Well I need it on Thursday and will be hiring the van....Thursday! So not much chance of that. Wonder if my residential permit will do it...

Feck it, I'll just load the car up a couple of times and the rubble can wait.

I am sure the costs vary greatly on area.

I pay £150 in the Thames Valley area for a 6 or 8m2 skip , get whatever turns up

i know this sounds a bit 'odd' but if you can;t get a skip at all cheaply then can;t you just get a van from (even hertz) and put it all in there and take it to the tip?

Caged van could be easier for garden waste.

No skip on the road, no permit, no trips to the dump.

Something like this?

Are you in Bromley? Most decent skip companies will be on council lists in terms of permits so they will do that for you anyway, although the cost of said permit will be added to cost of skip..they can/will do this same day virtually,i ordered one today for tomorrow delivery no problem.Cost will be around £100'ish for small skip plus permit cost.

We got a couple of Jumbo bags from Wickes for our garden stuff.
£10 for the bag, and the gardener took them away for £50 the pair smile

That not what OP wanted - he wanted to hire the skip for one day only which is not the same as ordering it sameday/next day.
IME hiring just for one day is difficult as I mentioned in previous post.

Whenever I have had a skip it's cost £125 for an 8 yard skip and it was £25 extra for a permit, which the skip company did for you straight away, get the yellow pages out and have a ring around and tell them you need it taking away the same day i've never had a problem with them doing this. What about hiring a grab wagon, I have just done my drive and dug out 16 and half ton of crap and the man with the wagon charged me £130 to take it away.
(Edit: never mind the grab wagon if you dont want to damage your drive)

No,what i meant was that they will sort out the permit on the same day and you do not need to sort it out weeks/days in advance. As stated above there is no problem in arranging a same day pick up,or even (as has been done) a 'wait and load'
