Anyone used Artificial turf for their front lawn?

What sort of price would I be looking at per sqm and can it be laid DIY or does it require a specialist?

But you would miss out on cutting the lawn ? You won't have that excuse of getting out the house for a while and ignoring the missus whos been bending your ear all morning !!

I find it quite therapeutic trying to get those stripes just right.

I did too until my self propelled cylinder mower packed up.

Try cutting a 100ft lawn with a flymo!!!

hehe

I agree though, good excuse just to be outside.

I had a quick look into it recently. Its really a specialist job if you want good results as it requires a base preparation

the price was crazy too ...many thousands for our lawn so I didnt bother...

I think you are looking at £10-15 a sq/m upwards for decent stuff ....just for the turf itself, not the base

Have just had turf put down on my back garden so i can do plenty of mowing

Normally our problem with the grass turf is that in winter it becomes very muddy when peopel walk over it to get to the frotn door. As I have dug up the old garss I have put in a path so that may negate that problem.

Still would be nice to have a low hassle lawn as the front one is mainly 'for show' and probably wont be used liek the front one

although i dont want it to stand out too much as a fake!

mmm, so instead of mowing your lawn you will end up washing it? After all, grass keeps growing and looking fresh, dirty rain on artifial grass will just mean it will get dirtier though out the year???

Just an thought, never had it myself....

Our back garden is artificial, it's great. I can't remember how much it was as it was part of a general refurbishment, we went for it after re-turfing a coupele of times which didn't work.

It doesn't need cleaning, the rain takes care of that.

you hoover it a couple of times a year LOL wink

the expensive stuff looks like real grass ...its come a long way since the early stuff

but then paying £20-30 per sq m (laid) for some fake grass is a bit steep for me...my back bit of grass is about 25m x 25m and it worked out to £10K ish

for someone else to come and lay some mid range "artificial grass"

But what about the bird crap, leaves, general dust and dirt plus other outdoor stuff, surely it must get dirty?

Well about every three weeks a leaf blower is used on the garden including the lawn to clear it up of such debris so you would do that anyway. Bird crap doesn't seem to be an issue for us.....it's only overhung by a tree in one small part but birds obv don't roost there. Elsewhere in the garden we have some very/tall mature shrubs and palms which birds don't seem to roost in. Oh and of course it doesn't need cuttng/weeding/scarifying/fertiliser etc etc.

How wide? My verge is over 100ft and a flymo is fine (actually I use an old Hayter).

Cutting all my grass can take all day (with my new Honda) if I collect the cuttings (I can put them on the muck heap down the road). Set the cutter to mulch last Saturday and finished the lot in two and a half hours - a good walk.

We had a sample of artificial grass pushed through out letterbox the other day and it's quite impressive stuff.

Don't know if everyone around here got one, but the penalty of a SW facing rear garden in the NE facing front gets very little sun and the (small) grass area has always looked terrible so I am thinking of getting it done.

Their website is here: http://www.hitechturf.co.uk - you can send for a sample. I guess they buy the "grass" in from someone.

(I have no connection with this company and know nothing about them)

Well its 2.90 a sqm for turf as opposed to roughly 26 plus for artificial turf so I think i will go au natural.

It also looks like a bit of a mission to install it DIY.

Pah! My mum used to mow a bigger lawn than that with a Mountfield rotary type. rotate

Then she would do the front with a manual cylinder.

She wouldnt let me do it in case I chopped my feet off.
