does employment status affect it?

haven't had any for 12 months but now need to get cover to meet the t&c's of a heritage grant i've been awarded. a year's buildings only cover is coming out at a shocking £450. this is with endsleigh who i was with before and who only charged me £250ish for the priveledge back then.

the only difference in circumstances is that i am currently unemployed. does this load a premium? i can't figure out why it would.

any recommendations for cheap cover? the comparison sites bring dial direct as the cheapest [£150] but i've never heard of them. post office is the cheapest 'name' at £230.

Do they ask for employment status?

I can argue it both ways. Unemployed, you're at home all day so more likely to knock something over or start a fire. Employed, you're out all day so a burglar can break in...

If they're worried about theft, I'd say being unemployed should get a lower premium!!

Yeah they do ask. according to the girl I spoke to on the phone just now it can affect the premium but she doesn't know why or how. due to the length of time I've been unemployed, she told me I didn't need to disclose it.

the high premium is apparently due to the size of my house (4bed) and the fact their computer has grossly overestimated the rebuild cost. of course, there's nothing they can do about that...

I'm downgrading a bedroom to a study for tommorrow's quotes!

Think curly. One bedroom, three studies.

Well i'm classified as unemployed (with income) and my insurance this year with Direct Line for a 4 bedroom house with integral garage. Came to the princely sum of £66. This is for both buildings and contents.

Nearest quote was Halifax for £138.

Though I am a tad concerned what level of service I might get for £66 Quid.

I just got a very competitive quote from Liverpool Victoria yesterday so you could try them.
