Hi All,

We're looking to have some decking put in. It will be roughly 3m deep, with one side coming out straight from the house on a level but fairly uneven concrete base, and the other side angling in from the house, taking it from around 5m wide at the back of the house to 3m wide at the garden side. This side is more evenly concreted, but has a slight slope.

The whole thing will be roughly 1m off the ground, with fencing roughly 2m above that on both sides, with a gate built into one side, and steps down to the garden at the front. No need to resurface anything underneath it, but there is a flower bed in there, so presumably it will need to have some sort of plant killing sheet or something put down.

Can anyone give me an idea of roughly how much that might cost, and how long it might take? We've only had one bloke come round so far, and we're still waiting for him to submit a quote, but he reckoned on 10 days of work, which just seems utterly ludicrous for that sort of job? It didn't take much longer than that to put up a single story extension of the same size, roof and all!

Also, if anyone does this sort of thing for a living anywhere near Epsom and would like to quote for the job, give me a shout!

It'll take longer than you think! I did a simple decking patio at work, and it took 2 of us a full day.

Oh I don't doubt that, but to go from two of you - who I assume to be relatively inexperienced amateurs from the sound of it - taking a whole day to put in a patio to experienced professionals who do this for a living taking 10 days seems a bit of a piss take!

I layed my decking ( non professional ) in 2 days 8m x 4m

It took a Half a day to prepare the ground , leveling ,
then setting out the framework

the second day was placing the battons and trellis , it was a big advantage using a power impact screw driver saved a lot of time , I bought all decking , trellis , screws from

http://www.timberdeckingco.co.uk/Deck%20Panels.htm

top class service , highly reccommend ,

10 days ...............is taking the mickey , depending on size a two man team should complete 2-3 days max

I'm not too worried about that. It's going to be a few feet off the ground, with plenty of space for our cats to get under there. There's far more attractive places for them in the existing garden.

The foxes that lived in our next door neighbours garden also seemed keen on them.

In terms of decking, I built a large deck in our old place, took forever to get the base sorted as it was on uneven concrete and split level. I spent a lot of time sorting the base out, and then once you've got that sorted the actual deck boards fly on. I did it over a number of weekends, mainly as I kept dodging off to the pub/watch F1/have a social life, but I reckon it would easily have taken me on my own 4 weekends, so about 8 days, of which about 7 was on the base.

If its 1m off the ground you WILL need Planning Permission!!!!

Check with your Local Authority first!

I'm sure there is another thread on here where a guy has become a cropper due to Planning!

Planning is required to raise your ground level by more than 300mm I think.

Already done! It went through along with building a single storey extension.

Selco builders warehouse currently have 50% off 100mm decking, free delivery on orders over £50.

I have nothing to do with Selco, just buy a lot from them and ordered some decking last week. Offer ends 30th April I think.

Last summer I built a decking approx 23m x 5m on a bit of sloping ground. We had to build some blockwork sleeper walls so that skews my timing a bit!

The timberwork, 115m2 of deck, 300-odd m of 6x2 joists, 33m of balustrading and two sets of steps took 3 guys 4 full days with a bit drinking and pi55ing about.

I bought all my timber using a trade account at a local suppliers who were a good 20% cheaper than anybody else. Cost about 3k iirc.

One thing though, the deck boards although cheap were irregular widths and quite a few were twisted. This slowed us down quite a bit!
