I want to make a new bathroom cabinet shallower and this means making three glass shelves narrower too. They are currently 120mm deep and I need them about 95mm deep. Problem is that they are probably toughened glass. Local glass place doesn't think it can be done. Apart from getting new glass cut and toughened, is there an answer? Diamond tile cutter perhaps?
If they are toughened they will shatter. You can usually grind a small amount off an edge, but any more than that and they will break.
Do they have a toughened stamp on them? if not, they won't be toughened, usually in a corner or on the edge of the glass.
If they're not toughened, a glass cutter, some white spirit and a straight edge, score then tap from one side and follow the break. Emery cloth to take the rough edge off if it will be exposed.
Otherwise buy new - they're not expensive if you go to the right places

The shelves don;t say 'toughened' but I took them down to see the man at ALM Glass and he not only said they were toughened, but looked at the bevel and said 'Chinese' (not surprising)
To make three new shelves 470mm x 95mm he quoted me £10 per shelf - is that about right?

Well I can confirm that you can't cut toughened glass with a tile cutter
Someone mentioned that it might be possible to cut it with a laser - is that so? Or would it be cheaper to make new?
ETA: Have ordered the new ones at £10 each. Thanks for the confirmation vxsmithers.

I can get them laser cut for you, would cost about £25 a shelf.
