Hi,

No not yellow stains in my pants but on the wall and ceiling :-)

We have a small room which has had 2 walls (freshly) plastered. We painted the walls a magnolia type colour and the ceiling white.

Some light yellow type stains have appeared randomly in the corner and on the ceiling. Its not like a patch thats getting bigger but lots of small patches that are not linked.

Initially I thought it was some reaction with the plaster but the ceiling wasn`t freshly plastered. Only other idea is the cold. The house currently doesn`t have central heating.

Very wierd, any ideas/solutions welcome.

are you sure they are not linked? They dont follow paths of cables in the wall or anything?

Leaking hot water cylinder? Put your hand round the bottom and check.

I'd be with Defcon

Have you plastered over some trunking/cabling/pipework?

That can leach into fresh plaster and stain yellow. If it is & you have done this, easy cover up with a stainblock paint (a.k.a oil based paint). That will seal it off ready for an overcoat if need be.

Im pretty confident there is no pipework. On of the walls is a party wall (terrace house) another wall is the outside back wall and there is nothing above the ceiling.

The house has never had central heating so hence no pipework.

Unless next door have their boiler in this position ? Possibilty ?

So if I use an oil based paint as a undercoat and then go over the top with Emulsion, this should hopefully solve my problems.

Also it has only taken a week for the stains to come through, and the patches don`t feel a different temperature/damp from the rest of the wall.

We have the same with our kitchen caused by water running down the outside wall and working its way through the brickwor. ( ours is caused by the fact that we have had scaffolding up for a year)

I will take a picture later.

Could just be residual staining in the plaster. Check to make sure there are no leaks etc, you can buy a damp meter for peanuts, if the patches are dry then paint it with a stain block and then repaint.

You can buy paint that is designed to stop the yellowing effect showing through. Got mine from B & Q. It wasn't too expensive either.

We had a similar patch appear on a newly plastered wall, well it was skimmed over old plaster, on a chimney breast.

So far it hasn't come through the paint and this done last June time.

Have you not been in the house long?

If they slowly form the letters GET OUT! then TBH I'd heed the advice.

If it does spell "GET OUT" I wouldn`t need telling twice.... One of the doors does have a big axe mark in it Shining Style.

I will nip to B&Q and ask for the stain paint, should do the job.

The plaster is just a skim, so gone on top existing plaster.
