Boiler sounds like a cow :o

Hiya - our boiler has been making some weird noises over the last couple of weeks, getting worse and worse.
It sounds a bit like a cow, although it's got to the point now it would be a very BIG cow! When it starts up in the morning, or occasionally after it's been on a while (presumably when it kicks in again) you get this really loud noise - sort of groaning/mooing/trombone sort of noise. Really loud, and can last 20 seconds or so, then it dies away.
It doesn't do it every time, but has anybody got any idea what it might be?
It's a normal (non-combi) boiler which is pretty old, and has also started making a bit of noise when it's running although I'm not sure that's related - a sort of grumbling noise.
