I am about to reduce in height some conifer trees, and whilst not having a wood burning stove, I do have an open fire place. So something tells me that one can not burn in a wood burning stove wood from conifer trees, due to the oily type content of the wood, does the same also apply to an open style fire?

Make sure you let it dry out and put a fire guard up incase it spits, but I'd have thought you should be fine, I'm sure my parents have burnt all sorts of wood in their open fire.

I asked a similar question recently of a wood burning stoves supplier as we have some lelandii to come down, and he reckoned that as long as the wood can be left to season for long enough, then it is ok to burn.

However, no responsibility accepted if this advice leads to your chimney catching fire hehe

When conifers/leyland cypress is thoroughly seasoned it is a perfectly respectable firewood.

If its not properly seasoned it will smolder, spit, smoke and act fire-resistant. The chemicals and resins within will also clog up your chimney liner.

If its seasoned properly it burns fast and bright.

a nice hot fire is what you need if you are mixing in some lesser qualiy wood so you could burn it
along with some better stuff (oak/ash etc)to be sure. the issue is crappy burning along with the resins condensing in the chimney and hen catching fire....

I burn all types of wood and mix them up to get the best results! as said before it needs properly seasoning and drying out (as does most wood) It can spit a little so a gaurd is a good idea!

Make sure your chimney is cleaned and in good order!
