What's the best way to drill a 110mm diameter hole through an outside wall?

Fitting an extractor fan and I don't want to cough up £40 for a tungston carbide hole saw.

I've got several masonary bits long enough to go through brick and breeze block in 1 go so I was planning to drill several smaller holes and chisel them into 1 large one.

No?

I've done the chain drilling thing before for a tumble drier vent, worked it quite well. You need a decent drill though, a mains SDS or something otherwise it'll take you all day! (ask me how I know this... rolleyes )

you can do it that way but it'll be messy and take ages

Dont mess about, go to your local hire shop and hire a diamond core bit or you will be there forever. Shouldnt cost you more than about 25 for a couple of hours. Make sure the drill you use has a safety clutch, else you may end up visiting casualty. Where abouts are you in the country?

cheers

Yes , done this many times . I have diamond core bits but they are not always perfect for the job , if your on a ladder with a drill big enough to drive a 110mm bit and it snatches ( as they tend to ) Its not allot of fun .
Tip is to drill your chain of holes with a small drill first and expand them gradually , this will save you chiseling as much once the core is out .

I did the 'ring of holes' method a few months ago with a mains SDS drill. It's not too difficult but makes a hell of a mess and the other side of the hole can break out badly as the drill exits (but that may well be covered by a flap/cover later)

I wouldn't even think about using an 'ordinary' hammer drill, you'll be there for days.

I hired a diamond tipped core drill for a few hours, cost me about 20 quid but had the hole drilled neatly and in short order, it just wasn't worth the hassle to do it any other way.

04 the best!

Tam and an S3 - thumbup

Always fancied getting another 350i before they've all gone to TVR heaven.

Maybe I shouldn't wait and just get 1 while I still have the Tam.

Just bear in mind with these,(like most things)you get what you pay for. Mine cost up in the hundreds for a reason.
Your best bet is the hire shop for core and the drill.

Get one of these to hit it with armour piercing shot, should make a circa 110mm hole.

Its got to be Core Drill every time, neat and easy.

If youre worried about doing this from a ladder, why dont you drill from inside the property ???
