I need to build 50 feet of wooden fencing, to go on concrete posts, normal garden style. They need to be 6' tall, or more, if allowed. Last time I needed some I simply ordered them from Jewsons, but they came to £50 each, for 5' panels, which seemed pretty pricey for the quality.

Here they are behind my Hardly Dangerous, and that is the style I want for the new ones. Anybody have any idea whether you can buy the raw wood and knock them up ourselves? Is it worth the hassle. They need to be good and solid, not the ones made from 5mm veneer that fall apart after a year.

Any websites on 'How to build decent fence panels'?

And what is the law for height of garden fences?

2M height limit behind the building line IIRC

So 6' fence panels on top of single gravel boards would be just about right then I reckon.

I built my own fence but I suspect it cost more than it would have to buy ready made panels. Your local timber merchants probably sell 6x6' decent quality panels, I'd guess around £25-30.

If you just want pressure treated timber, Wickes are as good as anywhere, but avoid B&Q & Homebase etc where the quality of wood is often bad. IMO.

I will soon be making my new fence out of recycled plastic, lasts for ever and never needs painting!

That looks interesting, but I'd guess the cost would be no lower than for a quality wood fence?

I'll Google a local timber merchant and see what sort of prices they can offer.

But in theory the timber fence will require coating/ treating and will have to one day be replaced.

The plastic fence on the other hand. If no harm comes to it, it won't need treating/ coating and won't rot away in time like the timber.

Most plastics are degraded by UV light and eventually fade, go brittle, crack and fall apart.

Dont bother making them yourself, the materials will cost more than it does to buy ready made http://www.jacksons-fencing.co.uk

Hmmm, you're probably right. These do look rather inviting:

1.80m High - Level Top Featherboard Panel 1.83m Wide: £34.20

...except they are a bit of a way from where we live. frown

I found another, EFC Fencing, just 5 miles from our place, similar products, similar prices, big company, so I can pay a visit to them when I get back ashore in 17 days time.

The plastic linked seems to be a solid board. I'd say that this, if made from a good quality plastic designed to be outside, would outlast a wooden fence.

I did about 70 foot of tall picket style fencing last year using gravel boards I sliced up (from Wickes). Ready-made will be cheaper, the only reason I did it was the garden slopes and I wanted the fence to follow the slope rather than be step-wise with square panels - plus I wanted a size that it wasn't possible to buy ready made.

Have to say I wouldn't touch plastic fence boards with a barge pole - they look vile.

Aren't gravel boards concrete?

I've seen a 'fence' made from purely gravel boards, about 5' high. Looked solid, but heavier than buggery I bet!

They do both - concrete and wood. With concrete posts, I'd go with concrete.

I would imagine you could buy them made cheaper than you could source the timber.

Try Wards in Cheadle/Forsbrook - very reasonable.

I'd change your tyres if I were you, those OE ones last for ever but don't grip. Conti-Tours are what I used to have on my FXRT, not expensive, last well and cope more than adequately with anything a Harley can chuck at them. I passed a GS1000 round a long bend on mine, with everything on the deck, perfectly happily.

I was forced to change the rear tyre three weeks ago, after it picked up a 2 inch slice. And it was nigh on brand new.

I fitted another Harley Davidson Dunlop something or other, same as the front. I'm not really into speed or cornering that much.

"Gravel board" is where it is, can be concrete or wood. I used them (wooden ones) as they were a cheap source of fairly substantial timber.
