.....to replace half a ton of bloody shingle.

I had thought about using that plastic stuff which is laid in sheets & can be filled with gravel or though which grass can grow.

Trouble is, there is a bit on a slope, probably 150 - 200mm difference in height, that might not be good for a bike in the wet.

Also, the area under the gate swing will need to be relatively level, which might mean that the incline will need to be shorter & steeper.

The distance from gates to garage is 5m.

If anyone has any ideas (esp if you are or know of a good contractor), please post or drop me a pm.

Thanks in advance.

PS. I know the gates etc are shagged & will be replaced once the ground work is fixed.

Tarmac?

Cheap, easy and quick. Will also be easy to sort the level out for the gates.

They don't, it has to be in the garage.

Oh, I don't know. You could get it with the little white stones spread over it.

Or even some coloured stuff biggrin

Not forgetting that if you go for an impervious (spelling is crap) solution you will need planning permission. Water will need to drain to a soak away etc. So the new asphalt which lets water through is the solution if you go tarmac.

Same issue with blocks, you'll need planning permission. Problem with blocks is they always seem to get lines on them where you usually drive, so end up looking daft.

Whats wrong with the shingle? And when you take it out can you deliver it to me please?!

Is that expensive?

I guessed PP might be the case.

My initial thought was a mix of hard standing & something to let water drain (such as the grass or gravel stuff mentioned above).

As Slagathore said, a coloured tarmac (brown or green) does seem favourite.

The problem with the shingles is not brilliant when wanting to roll the bikes out of the garage for washing etc., and the gravel jams under the gates, which has added to their early failure.

Well that & they're crap & were poorly installed.

I left two flower beds (near the entrance posts) for run-off and the council were quite happy with this. As for wear and tear, it hasn't been an issue so far but it's worth paying for a recommended landscaper.
