can anyone recommend a cooker?

hmmm, built in gas makes it difficult. Last time I was looking most of the decent and above makes had moved to just electric built in - only a few gas BI were available and they were from the lesser quality brands.
I think you may be stuck with the likes of Hotpoint, Electrolux, Zanussi and similar.

trouble is, nearly every make has an associated horrer story, especially Smeg who I'd thought of as a quality manufacturer. Looking at Neff or Bosche
I bought a Britannia because it was supposedly the dogs danglies cooker from a dogs dangly manufacturer. It's utter st, I wish I'd never bought it, had I not taken so long to fit it I'd have sent it back under distance selling regs.
Go viz Ze Germans!
Also, go electric (+/- fan) for the oven- gas hobs are a clear winner, but gas ovens are a st to clean.
I'd vote Neff for the oven. Wouldn't argue if you chose Bosch. The German manufacturers pretty much fall under two groups, these days, with lots of parts sharing. Someone who knows did post the groupings on a (dishwasher?) thread, but Search isn't exactly google so I can't find it at the moment...

Miele, DeDietrich, Bosch/Neff/Siemens are the ones you should be looking at, maybe AEG/John Lewis if they are a bit cheaper than the above but with the same features.
You will hear 'horror' stories for every brand, including Miele...for example see above re: De Dietrich, but when I was last selling these things at John Lewis, my colleague who had been there 20 years - so he really knew his stuff, and knew which brands broke down, how good their c/m service is etc - bought a De Dietrich double oven. If you stick with the brands above, you shouldnt go far wrong.
Anything that says Hotpoint, Belling, Stoves, Zanussi on the front or any of the crap from Currys, you should stear clear of - a similar spec'd Bosch will normally only be a bit more money, but it will be a lot better quality, design and look.

Not related to ovens but a couple of years ago ours, and our neighbours washing machines brioke down at the same time.
Our neighbour bought the cheapest one he could get that did everything he (or rather his wife) wanted it to do, and we spent 3 times as much on ours.
His theory was he could buy another 2 washing machines before getting up to the price of ours and was therefore treating it as a disposable item. 3 years on both are still going well! So mine currently has to last at least 9 years before I am quids in!
So it may be worth bearing in mind how much total life cost is.
Incidentially when I had a new kitchen fitted in my old house I delibrately didn't go for built in appliances. I felt that by having slot in appliances I was increasing my negotiation options when I sold the house. Ie if I was seeking £75,000 and they offered £70,000 I could suggest £73,000 and I'll throw in the kitchen appliances.

Yes but that's three years you haven't had to look at a badge that says 'Krappomatic' Now do you mind if I go and hide from the PH women?
