Quick question for you,

We have a wooden staircase and the landing carpet wraps over the top lip. I guess it is then tacked to the underside of the top step?

One of the florboard on the landing has either broken or come up as there is a tell tale sign of dirt coming up through the carpet and a distinct creak and movement when trodden on.

So, whats the best way to undo the carpet edge so that I can gain access to the offending floorboard and then refix the carpet back down again without a problem.

I'm not a carpet fitter but we recently had a new one fitted... (slightly different in that we have carpet down the stairs but as our bottom step is curved it was stapled and glued.

I'd imagine that your step would be similar. You might better off visiting your local shop (not carpet right) and seeing if you can get one of the fitters to come out and remove the carpet then refit it a later date).

If it's just held by grippers you can carefully pull up a corner by gripping the pile with pliers - but if you take up too much you can lose tension when putting it back (I use a wallaper scraper to poke it back down between gripper and wall)

I think I can feel tacks when I run my fingers under the lip !!

I dont want to try and grip them with a pair of long nosed pliers if its not going to work.

May just find a local fitter and see if they can help...dont want to admit defeat though..;)

Oh right, it's been tacked under the top step (I was thinking you could lift it by a wall). If you want to refit a floorboard ypu'll need to pull up a fair bit. Up to you!

To get the tacks out you would be better using electricians side cutters than pliers. You can push the tips into the carpet and get them under the tack head. You are not going to cut the tack just lever it out.
