Furniture sofa store has sale on (doesn;t say closing down). However, when i showed intrest in sofa he asked how i would be paying and i was alarmed when salesman said they did not accept credit cards - is this a scam to stop me claiming as store might be going bust?
Or is it completely innocent and above board?

Could be any number of reasons

1) Disorganised
2) Commission too heavy from card company
3) Newly set up, card system not set up

Tis unusual though for a retail outfit. If in doubt don't, other retail outlets are available.

Or - they know that when they go pop all the unhappy customers will claim their money back from the credit card companies, who will claim it back from the company, which will reduce the winnings for the corrupt directors...?

I'd certainly be wary. It's not uncommon for credit card facilities to be pulled before a company goes belly up. Sadly the act of pulling facilities often directly results in the collapse but you can't blame them as they have to reimburse people who have goods on order.

Of course that's the worst case scenario and may very not be the case but I'd be wary of paying cash/cheque to such a company unless I could take the goods from stock.

There is another sinister ploy, you pay with any other method other than credit card, you think the product is crap after a few months one year, you have to claim with the company for a replacement/refund/partial refund.

They have the money and will give the big chase around trying to hang on to it ( I have seen some seriously shoddy manufacturing "repaired" with equally shoddy materials by "their" tradesman ).

You pay with a credit car and breath a word of discontent to the credit card company they will whip that money straight back before you can say thats mine.

We have problems with customers in the know "blackmailing" us over things that are nothing to do with us ( massive scratches a month ofter delivery etc ) knowing full well if they complain that the money will be taken off us and held until the situation is resolved.

By the way the protection exists on Visa Debit cards as well. Its not widely known but the VISA terms and conditions mean your bank has to give a refund if you don't receive, or are disatisfied with goods that you have paid for using your VISA debit card. There is also no £100 limit either.

And yes it does work, the Halifax call centgre denied it when I called them following Oliver Woo going bust with £550 of my money. However I wrote to them and in 48 hours the money was back in my account!

It isn't nearly as open for abuse as the credit card legislation.

Essentially the credit card company is the buyer, they have the ability to buy something and then take the money back if they so wish, straight from the bank account.

Visa rules are different. You have MUCH more protection with a credit card. I take both, I would always rather someone paid with debit.

I'd be weary, especially if they can't offer an acceptable reason.

Not what the bank said! They didn't even investigate! They just placed the money straight back in to my account and wrote to say the retailer might complain!
