Hi all, Just before i went out this morning i put a load in to wash, when i returned home there was water sitting in the drum. Its never done this before so i set it to spin again. Its start to spin but it will only do so at a low speed. When its supposed to get faster it just stops. Its a Hotpoint Aquaruis 1000. I have checked the pipes to make sure they are not blocked and that, the only thing i have noticed is the brushes i can see arcing on the inside of the motor, and when i remove them they are about 15mm long, does any one think this could be my problem? It works fine all the way up to the fast spin.

Many thanks in advance,
Garry

Does it have a filter? If so check that as well.

Ours has a sensor on which limits the spin speed if the load is unbalanced, have you had it long? The other thing could be the drain pump is on the way out or something blocking the filter.

I had this on my Ariston, it would wash, then try and spin up, then stop.

Turned out to be a duff drain pump.

Had an Aquarius at one time - pretty sure it'll be the bushes (mine ate them!!) from memory they should be about 1½ inches long.

Havent check the filter, i take it that would be near the bottom some where? Just noticed it seems to be making a bit of a humming noise when i select spin. Ive had it for 3 years.

ETA Have been trying it with stuff in and with an empty drum aswell

Could very well be the brushes, I had the same problem with mine. I went to a local repair shop and bought a new set for a tenner, fitted them, and haven't had a problem since. It's an easy job to do so I'd do that first.

Humming, slow to start and crackles, fails or falters to get up to speed?

Sound like brushes to me.

The filter is likely to be on the front at the bottom. Don't forget it is likely to have water in it so you'll need a tray or something to go underneath it when you undo it (hope this isn't too late laugh).

Sounds a bit more electrical but I'd try the obvious things first so you can discount them.

Oh and just to be better safe than sorry - unplug it before you go poking around inside smile

Many washing machine motors have two sets of brushes, one for slow speed running and another set for high speed. Any local washing machine repair place will sort this for you at minimal expense.

Before you do that, pull the filter off and look inside. If there is a hairclip in there, it will stop the drum from emptying and the machine will just make noises etc instead as yours is. I speak from experience, as my GF has blocked ours twice now.

There is a forum that is something like whitegoods.co.uk that is sort of a Pistonheads for washing machines, they will be able to fix it.

Ben

p.s. The brushes going in 3 years sounds fairly rubbish and the other factor is to reduce sparks / EMC the motor end of the link if made of fairly soft stuff so will go not long after the brushes. Still does sound like the brushes, having said all that.

Bizarrely - I can concur that it sounds like the brushes.

Because I have a Hotpoint Aquarius 1200 and it did this same thing 3 years ago and had them replaced to fix it - oddly it started doing this again last week and is being fixed again on Friday.

yes My machine kept aborting on the spin cycle and I was ready to put new brushes on etc but checked the filter and drain pipe first. I found about 8 1" nails in there, a few 5p pieces and about 5 plastic collar stiffeners from my shirts. Works perfectly again now.
