Tonight was the first night it turned cold so I used my electric fire in my rented property.

I went to the kitchen to cut an onion. I turned around and my carpet is on fire, flames 4ft high.

Its amazing what happens in a fight or flight situation and everything was OK. I managed to extinguish the flames very quickly and no damage to anything else.

Bit shakey but on surveying the damage it seems that a coil in the heater itself has broken and fell on to the carpet. 4ft x 4ft burn.

That is all.

Scared of telling the estate agents though! Piss poor carpet - No underlay etc.

I think I would have run around squealing like a wee girl if it had been me.

Then again, I did once manage to extinguish a kitchen fire....yeh okay I caused it when I placed a teacloth on the cooker, forgetting I'd just lit the ring paperbag

Glad you're okay

are you looking at this the wrong way? Rather than sounding like you've done something wrong would it not be better to ask for safety certificateshehe

Scared to tell them ? I'd be throwing a wobbly and demanding safety certs and a new carpet (with underlay).

My housemates (female) were whinging about the cold on Sunday and turned on the heating while I was out. I thought it was fine.

Can't remember when I turned on in this house in recent years. Surely at least not until daylight saving ends!

In my head I can picture Scott330ci verbalising this, starting off calm and then being overcome with rage and shouting like that journalist guy who got hacked off with the scientologists. hehe
