There must be someone on here who can help out on this one. I’m at a bit of loss and don’t know where to start looking, what is available and how much things cost/what I need.
Basically, I am after a new car, looking like a VX220 for around 10 grand or so. I know it’s not loads of money but it’s enough and I want to look after it.
I was hoping I would have been able to sort out my back yard, but long story and it’s not going to happen in the immediate future.
I don’t see why I should have to drive a st car just so someone doesn’t steal/vandalise it so I’m thinking about installing a camera on the front of my house, I know this won’t stop the scum bags but at least I’ll be able to see what has happened, ie, kids pedalling into it etc.
So, any info would be nice. I’m thinking, although I may have made this up, that something that only films When it senses movement may be appropriate. Other than that I’m open to suggestions, but, I don’t want to be spending a fortune so ideas of cost etc would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Cramman.

There is free software available which will allow you to use a bog-standard webcam for this. Think it's called Dorgen or similar. I'd google it for you but it's time for lunch ....

Thanks for the replies, I'll have a look at Maplin, one not far from work and also that logitech one. Just need somewhere to get me stated.

The PC based one is a good idea, but, I only have a works laptop, never really seen the need for a pc in the house, and if I did it would probs be another laptop, I live in a flat so space for a desktop isn't the best. Will look into it as an option tho, maybe cheaper in the long run.

If you want something that works independently of a PC then read up on IP cameras. I have one made by Axis (207MW) which works wirelessly. It can record on movement (either movie files or stills), although I have a media NAS which I use to monitor the output of the camera.

I will look into that, sounds intersting and probably very complicated but defo worth a shot.
From the research I have done, it appears the easiest way is to link camera to a home computer. I would imagine that this wouldn't have to be a brilliant computer tho.
