Right. next on the list of things to get done is some new gates. we've plenty of other things to be getting on with so we thought we'd get quotes for people to make/modify some and fit them.

we want to get some reasonable quality WOODEN gates fitted to the side of our house. the width is something like 3.5m.

any recommendations - we live just outside Milton Keynes.

we had a quick look on the interweb last night and they seem to cost loads for what's essentially a few bits of wood (but i am, no doubt, missing something! wink )

basically all we want is moderately attractive wooden gates like you get from wickes but bigger..!

Quality costs I'm afraid..

Look at Crocketts gates.. They've done a couple of gates for other PHers.

ETA : http://www.crockettsgates.co.uk/ speak to Jason there.

Do you need to have planning permission to put thease on the front of your drive ?

I'm thinking of a pair of wooden gates attached to two brick columns and a small gate in line with them again with a brick built column.

I'm on a shared drive but I'm thinking that if i allow enough room for my neighbour to back his car over my building line upto the gates allowing him to drive out i should be ok scratchchin

Any thoughts much appreciated thumbup

On a shared drive yuo should check your deeds about what access your neighbour has.

Anything fronting a highway needs permission if it is higher than 3' (I think)

+1

I have to say that, as I have known him for a few years. He does make some great gates, and can even arrange to have them automated.

(BTW, he is also my BiL)

Try Southill Sawmill near Biggleswade (not far from you)

They make and supply all their own stuff, very resonable for 5 bar gates.

You could also try these guys: http://www.mlt.uk.com/index.htm

Ask for Edward (he runs it). They did some very nice gates for me recently and were cheaper than most other places.
