I posted on here last year about when to get my red prunis pruned but didn't get it done!

Now it really needs it as it is shading the garden, but of course at recession time I have very little money coming in. So before I get some tree surgeons in to give quotes and embarass myself by coughing and spluttering I thought I would try on here for a ball park figure.

I'm sure that there are lots of variable affecting quotes, but essentialy it is about 20' - 25' in height and I guess that I would like about 8' off (if possible). There is a 6' hedge alongside but essentially there is 360 degree access to it.

Anyone got a feel for what sort of money we would be talking about?

TIA

Jee, I hate technology. Well, only when I don't know what I'm doing...

Hopefully this will work... The hedge is about 6' tall.

Your missus should be careful cutting the grass in sandals - a slip of the mower and she could lose some toes!

You think I haven't told her?

Reckon you can work out her reply? Why oh why will she listen to ANYONE but me?

why don't you go and get the saw out? cut off the lower branches which are probably providing most of the shade and see what it looks like?

No, it all needs doing - the garden is in shade now most of the morning. The sun doesn't rise high enough late summer and early autumn to clear the top until late in the day.

That's easy enough to do yourself since it's not a particularly big tree. However, wait until winter time when all the foliage has dropped so all the branches are visible.

I had a guy come round to give a quote late last year, but hewasn't a tree surgeon - just a general garden handiman - but he didn't want to do it. He suggested that someone who knew about trees like a tree surgeon should look at it, in case he cocked it up.

So from that I'm guessing that there might be unforseen problems....

Thanks Tim, that's helpful. Best to wait until autumn and the foliage has gone, or won't it make much difference if it's done now?

It is a shame you are not in South London as this is what my little brother does (as well as the all the other gardening stuff). Good rates and RHS accredited too !

Do it now if ya like, it will need to be done every 2-3 years after tho as it will send out lots of sucker growth. Easy enough to do yourself tho, just remove the suckers back to reduction points;)
