Had a piece of St/St specially made to fit a broken top.
Problem is i let the GF measure it and she's done it wrong (shock).

I need to cut about 8mm off in total so that it'll fit snugly.
I dont have an angle grinder nor does anyone i know - it's probably the only time i'm ever going to cut anything metal so was thinking a dremel multi-tool might be a god shout as i can use it for other light stuff around the house (putting things together etc).
Need to cut about 4mm either side of this piece of st/st about 270mm in length.
Will a dremel do it ok?

Or will it be a waste of time & money?

How thick is the S/S? Up to about 2-3 mm - Dremel + one of the glassfibre(?) reinforced cutting discs will probably do fine. Anything thicker than that will test your patience at the least.

How thick's the stainless?

Had to cut a 2inch wide by 4 foot long strip of a 16swg galvanised sheet last weekend and my Dremel wasn't happy (it's a new toy so I thought I'd see what it could do).

Used the nibbler drill attachment that I use for bodywork and that was no problem. This is what I have: Nibbler

1.2mm - will the relevant cutting bit come with the dremmel?
I fancy one as a toy..

I would do a quick click on your local yellow pages find a sheet metal company local to you, ring them up and ask if they can guillotine 3mm of your St/St strip.

Probably cost you less in the long run than a Dremal, which I would say is not man enough for the job.

A guilly is the only way to go for a professional finish IMHO.

I work for a commercial catering supplier so we deal with st/st all the time.
But we only design supply & dont manufacture.
Due to the way the capping is made it won't be able to be guillotined (or however thats spelt).
+ it's for a piece at my house so i'm going to need to pay for it either way.
An angle grinder or a dremmel was all i could think of to sort it.
It's literally only a 2 min job i was going to do after work.
Would buying a cheap B&Q one do it ?

At the sort of prices they are now, buy a proper one. Once you have had it for a while, you'll be wondering how the heck you lived without...

If you've got 3mm ish to play with a jig saw with a metal cutting blade (wavy one) would be my choice of tool, you'll get far more control of cut and you may be able to use a straight edge if you can get one to suit your set up.

Or more seriously just get:

I'd use a bandsaw with a metal-cutting blade - but I happen to have one smile

NB Metal-cutting blades (ie like hacksaw blades, 24tpi IIRC) are surprisingly hard to find for them!

Cheap angle grinder you'll get a 'straighter' cut and it won't where ridiculously overpriced discs out every 5 seconds.

Dremels are brilliant. You just have to know when (and when not) to use them.
