Folks,

A young woman moved into our street about 3 years ago, directly across the road from my house. She lives on her own and, like me, has a driveway at the front of her property that has a grass strip down the side of it (approx. 1M wide by 4M long).

There is also a rear garden (5M by 8M approx) that I can't see from my house.

The grass in each garden has not been cut this year, and she has a car in her driveway that hasn't moved for AT LEAST a year and a half. It's off the road, so no worries about road tax.

The grass and weeds at the front of her house is, in places, half a metre high. There are also loads of weeds growing up through the monoblock. The back garden is full of rubbish and is equally overgrown.

She parks her other car (a rattly Alfa that hasn't seen a sponge since she bought it) half on the pavement which makes it difficult to gets cars onto/off our driveway.

My Mrs had a gentle word with her, even giving her the number of a gardener my mother uses but nothing changed. I then contacted the local council (this is in Scotland) who said they would inspect the property (they did) and would send her a letter asking her to tidy the place up but I was told there was nothing the council could do to force her. The street is all privately-owned.

Apart from this one woman everyone else in the street takes good care of their gardens etc and it annoys me (perhaps more than it should) that her gardens are a tip, and the car parking shenanigans.

So - is there anything more I can do, or do I have to put up with it until either she does something about it (unlikely) or one of us moves?

Oh, and just to pre-empt the standard question, no she is not 'fit'.

Not a lot you can do really, if it bothers you too much ask her if she would mind you strimming it down a bit at the front....The back does not matter because you can't see it.

Be polite at all times.

I do sympathise, but don't get too hung up about it, it's hardly life or death.

Did she say anything to your other half about why she didn't maintain her garden?

Have you considered offering to help? If it matters more to you than her, does it matter enough for you to do it for her?

absolutely...try and stop wasting energy allowing it to wind you up. She's a slob and she won't change.

TBH ignoring the car park issue, what has the state of her garden got to do with anyone else. Yeah, it might be unsightly, but if that's all, then there isn't really a problem.

You'd be quite surprised if you found she shaves her muff.

biggrin @ some of the replies already.

I know it winds me up more than it should, probably something to do with me being home all week (currently unemployed, looking after our 19-month daughter while the wife works).

She's a readhead so inkeeping with her gardening (or lack of) I bet the old addage about carrot tops of "Rusty roof, smelly cellar" would apply in this case!

When my wife spoke to her she kind of giggled and said "I don't have green fingers". Well, I don't want award-winning gardens just neat & tidy would do.

So.....which Alfa does she have? This is important when deciding on the next course of action.

It's a 156.

Your unemployed, neighbour's garden needs some TLC, glue the two together and voila! The solution is simple, get ye to the neighbour and proffer your services (of the gardening variety). Your happy, neighbour is happy, everyone's a winner mate and that's the truth! thumbup

I hate gardening too though. My front garden is chips (so we can fit two cars on the drive unlike the bint across the road) and our back garden is decking & chips too so I don't need to cut any grass.

I guess i'll just have to put up with it frown

Salt the earth, lay waste to her overgrown garden under cover of night with all manner of corrosive and plant killing chemicals.

You sound as miserable as my neighbour, who whenever he is off work has to find something to complain about in the street.

[devilsadvocate]So your neighbour has got an Alfa, is too busy driving it to worry about tidying her garden, and you're on Pistonheads complaining about it[/devilsadvocate]
