Wiring for speakers etc.

Personally i like it quiet but the other half doesn't. As we have a shell of a house I guess now would be the best time to install a ZONED music system or something? Any recommendations? I don't really like the idea of ceiling speakers but they would be out the way. I would like volume to be controllable in the different zones. Pref all via an ipod. I've looked at the apple airwaves but these need seperate amplifiers for each zone.

I keep reading about cat5 cable which i guess is just a home network but what's the point of this other than connectin pc's etc?
